From Your Pastors

I know we've sent a few emails this week, but this hasn't been an ordinary week. As your pastors, Pastor Michelle and I continue to discern how to serve and lead you during these days of upheaval.

I'll turn it over to Pastor Michelle in a moment, but I want to first say thank you to everyone who came out - on foot, bike, and car - to the demonstration earlier this week. Protest is not the only response to injustice, but it's important that the church make its presence and voice known during times like this. We are to prophetically remind the powers of our society that they exist beneath our sovereign God. When they exploit or abuse their power - as has consistently been the case against Black people in this country - we are bound to proclaim the Lordship of Christ over those corrupt powers.

As many of us were marching, Pastor Michelle gathered other for a time of prayer on Zoom. I understand that it was a very powerful time and I want to thank each of you who joined in prayer. What follows is a summary from Pastor Michelle that she was compelled to share with the entire church. Please read it carefully and let these words guide your prayers in these days.

During the prayer call, I invited people to share anything they felt the Spirit speaking to them and there were several words that were shared. I believe these words are for our church so I wanted to share them with everyone.

“Revelation” this is one of the words that a person on the call heard the Spirit saying. What I took from this is that we need a revelation from God to discern well what is going on and how we are to position ourselves. We should also be praying that God give a revelation to those who are blind to the injustices that have brought us to where we are.

Another person on the call felt led to share this: “There isn’t an us and a them. We can’t loose site of who our true enemy is. We have all been deceived and we need God to heal all of our hearts.”

Another person felt led to read Exodus 14:13-14 and I would encourage you all to read it when you have a chance. This passage is a reminder that God is the one who will deliver; God is the one who fights for us.

Lastly, a person on the call felt led to sing over us all a song that the Spirit brings to her mind in times of trouble, “Great is they faithfulness.” These words from the third chapter of the book of Lamentations have come up several times in the past two weeks at our church (during morning devotion and the corporate time of lament). I encourage you all to read the short book when you can.

On behalf of Pastor Michelle and myself, please lean into the Holy Spirit during these days. The same power that raised our Lord from the grave is at work in you!

Two quick things for Sunday. First, please have the communion elements on hand so that we can celebrate the Lord's Supper together. And parents, please have your children present for the kids' sermon that will immediately follow the announcements.
