In-Person Gathering?

Last fall I asked our ministry staff team what the temperature needed to be to schedule an outdoor service. The consensus was that it would need to be at least 50 degrees to worship together outside. But after a few months of winter, I wonder if our threshold might have dropped a few degrees. We can always bundle up, right?!

In all seriousness, as the weather begins to warm and more of us have access to the vaccine, many of us are beginning to wonder when we can begin to meet in person. This is something our staff team is watching closely, and I want to share a few things we're keeping in mind.
  1. We will track closely with some of our partner churches in the neighborhood as we corporately discern what is best, not just for our church but for the community as a whole.
  2. Kennicott Park has not been open for Sunday rentals since the pandemic began. Even if it had been, we would not have met there out of an abundance of caution. At this point, Kennicott is not planning on opening up to weekend rentals through the summer. We will check in with them in the coming months to get an update about the fall.
  3. We had success with some outdoor services last summer and fall. At this point our plan is to schedule more of those this spring and summer as we wait for the time when it's safe to meet inside. We are talking with our friends at West Point Baptist Church about using their parking lot for these services. This gives us access to the Ministry Center for sound equipment and access to the bathroom. (Reserving outdoor space from the Park District is very costly and there is no cancellation option for inclement weather, so we'll likely steer away from that option.)
  4. We are mobilizing a team of social ambassadors who will help us identify easy opportunities for people to connect in person outside in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned!
  5. We will be looking for people to serve with set-up, hospitality, and other teams for our outdoor services. Please watch for those opportunities to serve.
I know how difficult it has been to not be together over this past year. Thank you for how you have prioritized our most vulnerable neighbor's health and well-being. I can't wait until we can be together regularly again, and it seems like we're getting closer. In the meantime, let's continue to check-in with each other, meet together outside according to our comfort level, and look for ways to love our neighbors.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions as we head into the spring.

- Pastor David

PS Please note the dates and times for our Holy Week services. We have some really special things planned!

Community Prayer Requests

Each weekday at 8:00 am we gather online for a short devotion and time of prayer. Register for the Zoom call or join us on Facebook
  1. Please pray for our Asian American siblings and neighbors. In addition to the recent murders in Atlanta, there have been nearly 3,800 reported hate crimes against Asian Americans over the past twelve months.
  2. Pray for those who are feeling particularly lonely or isolated after a year of social distance. Who could you check-in with this week?
  3. Please pray for the schools we pray for each month - Jackie Robinson, NKO, and Ariel - as they transition to in-person learning.
