Nurturing Unity

Two Sundays ago, while looking at 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, we saw Paul's concern for the health of the Body of Christ, the church. Sick bodies can't do what they're meant to do. Likewise, when a church is divided or disjointed, it struggles to fulfill it's purpose of bearing witness to God's love through Jesus.

As a church community we do a lot! Last weekend was the New Community Outreach Art Show. It was amazing! In a few weeks we'll be hosting our 3rd annual Faith & Race Workshop. And not long after that we'll head to Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva for the church retreat.

But for all of our good and important doing, last Sunday's passage reminds us that if we're not healthy than our doing amounts to very little. This is why we're each called to prioritize the unity of the church through the Holy Spirit's power. Our acts of service and justice are a reflection of our identity as Christ's body.

Our first call is to be the Body of Christ. Everything else flows from that identity.

When we walked out of Kennicott on Sunday to pray for our neighborhood, we were demonstrating this dynamic. It is not our wisdom or strength that will bring about God's Kingdom in our city. Rather, it is our unity as the Body of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to bear fruit of righteousness. Anything we do must flow from who we are.

How can you nurture the unity of our church community? Who can you check-in on? Who needs to be encouraged? Who can be in your prayers? Rather than being insignificant acts of piety, these are the choices we can each make which will lead us to a more faithful representation of our Savior.

Community Prayer Requests

1) Jackie Robinson Elementary School: Praise God that the interim principal has been receptive to our partnership, including the Back-to-School Fair. Pray that the next permanent principal would continue the good work of previous administrations.

2) NKO School: While we've prayed for this local school for many years, we're only now developing a relationship with the administration. Pray for wisdom about how we can support this school.

3) The Gifts of the Spirit: On Sunday we talked about seeking the Holy Spirit. Pray that we'll each want the gifts of the Spirit that God desires for us.
