The Feast!

Most of us eat pretty well most of the time. We have access to healthy and delicious meals whenever we want them, whether that's making a meal at home or going out to one of our city's countless interesting restaurants. In fact, we eat well enough most of the time that the concept of feasting might be lost on us.

In the Bible we find both fasting and feasting. Fasts were called in response to sin and wickedness. But feasts were also called, as a way of remembering and celebrating God's faithfulness. God's people held these two together - fasting and feasting - as a physical expression of their relationship with God. Without the feast, fasting becomes an act of self-righteous denial. And without the fast, feasting becomes an excuse for gluttonous self-indulgence.

As we come to Christmas, a season of feasting is about to commence. Maybe you've sung The Twelve Days of Christmas. Well, did you know that Christians have historically celebrated the birth of Christ with a 12-day feast? As we do in the season of Easter, these are days to willfully rejoice in the extravagant mercy of our Savior.

There will always be reasons to fast. In a world groaning under our sin, waiting for our Savior's return, how could there not be? But because Jesus the Messiah was born into this world, there will also always be reasons to feast.

I hope you can join us for our Christmas Eve service on Tuesday. Maybe you'll want to bring some cookies or other snacks to help us break the Advent Fast and commence the Christmas feast.

- Pastor David

PS During her excellent sermon two Sundays ago, Valeri Chow Tao mentioned the concept of life mapping as a way think about how God might call us to use our place in history. Here is one resource she shared for those interested in learning more.

Community Prayer Requests

1) Angie Monroy was a sixteen-year-old student of one of our members, Daniel Michmerhuizen, when she was shot and killed last week. Please pray for all who are grieving her terrible loss as well as for peace in our city.

2) Pray for those in our country who will spend Christmas away from their families due to imprisonment or detainment.

3) Please pray that all of our teachers will get a couple of weeks full of rest and rejuvenation before school begins again next month.

Year-end Giving Challenge: Bus Passes

As we have been announcing, this year we decided that every dollar given beyond our budgeted income will go to purchasing bus passes for refugee families served by World Relief. We have met budget! Everything given beyond this point will go to serve the needs of these individuals and families as they get accustomed to their new home. Don't know how to give at New Community? Check out this info sheet. Thanks for your generosity!
