Next week we will enter the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday service (7:00PM at Kennicott). Taking Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness and Israel's 40 years in the wilderness as the pattern, Lent is a time of reflection and repentance leading to Insurrection Sunday.

During Lent we recognize two fasting days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (April 19), during which we do not eat until after our evening worship services. We also abstain from eating any meat on Fridays during Lent. We also are encouraged to consider what we can individually abstain from during these 40 days. You might consider certain foods, drinks, or forms of media as you discern what you might abstain from during these weeks. As you discern how to participate during Lent, please care for your health and share your disciplines with a trusted friend or family member.

Christians have historically observed seasons of fasting (and abstaining) as embodied responses to what is wrong in our world. When we fast we are, from the depths of our personhood, turning away from sin, wickedness, and injustice and toward the God who took all of these upon himself on the cross. During Lent we ask the Holy Spirit to help us bravely look at the ugliness we might otherwise choose to ignore, trusting that nothing is more powerful than the cross. In the shadow of Calvary, repentance always leads to redemption.

- Pastor David

PS For more information about Lent read this reflection about why Christians fast, watch this video from Bible Study last year when we studied the biblical perspective about fasting, and check out this handout focusing on what Christians historically have fasted in response to.

Community Prayer Requests

1) Lent: The 40 days before Easter can be a time of spiritual struggle and healing for many of us. Please pray for those who find themselves in especially tenuous situations, that they would know the strong presence of the Holy Spirit.

2) Bright Star Church of God in Christ: Our friends at Bright Star are moving their worship services to Kenwood High School this week. Pray for a smooth transition.

3) Facility: Pray for wisdom and courage as we discern God's will for a permanent facility for our church.
Your generosity helps our ministry flourish. Please see this fact sheet to learn more about how to give or visit our website to give online. Thank you!
