Help bring fish to the Science Room?

The Science Corporation wants to put a tank of Harlequin Rasbora fish in the Science Room. School Meeting wanted to match the dollars they put into the project, but we've already spent our discretionary budget for the year. We're hoping to raise $60 through this Fundrazr campaign.

Claire, the driving force behind the fish project, says, "I'm really excited about getting our fish tank set up! This project has been in the back of my mind for years, and is finally happenings. The goals of the project are to learn how to care for fish and to study the life cycle of the Harlequin Rasbora. Thank you for helping to make this a reality!"

These are Harlequin Rasbora fish,
but not the exact ones that'll be in the Science Room.

The search continues... and a
Building Design Committee is formed

In anticipation of possible relocation, School Meeting's Property Search Committee has continued an intensive search of real estate within about two miles of the current location. A few weeks ago, the committee, chaired by staff member JD Stillwater, submitted to School Meeting a report featuring nine potential campus sites. Field trips including students Sol and Elijah have been made to two of the sites.

Here's what they're looking for:

  • located within about two miles of 210 Oakleigh Ave (to preserve busing from as many districts as possible)
  • at least five acres of land
  • a code-ready building of at least 7,000 square feetor no buildings on-site (most residential structures will add significant cost to the purchase, but will cost more than new construction to bring up to code)

In the meantime, a Building Design Committee of nine students and staff has been formed to make recommendations for the design of a new building.

Seem a little crazy to start designing a building when we don't know when (or even if) we'll find a campus? We're hoping if we can find a suitable site, with the help of friends of the school, we might be able to move in the fall of 2014, so we're doing as much internal work to prepare as possible.

Stay tuned, and let us know if you'd like to get involved!

Spring Gala Wowie Zowies

I (Julia) am something of a procrastinator myself, so I probably shouldn't be so amazed when this happens -- but last week, just before the deadline, donations to the Spring Gala doubled. The front office is overflowing with cool stuff! Many many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who took letters to area businesses asking for their support. And, of course, many thanks to the local and national businesses who have donated (see the list to the left). I think there'll be something for everyone in the Silent Auction!

Meanwhile, the Music Corporation is auditioning hopeful performers for the afternoon, and the Social Committee is making plans for a delightful potluck picnic.

We hope you'll come out to join us on Saturday, May 11, from 12pm to 4pm!
