Ask Peru to stop gas exploration in uncontacted tribes' territory

Last time, so many of you sent urgent action emails to Peru's Minister of Culture that her inbox collapsed under the pressure!

Now we're asking you to write to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, which is leading the aggressive campaign to send hundreds of gas workers into the uncontacted and isolated Nahua and Nanti Indians' forest, detonate thousands of explosive charges, and sink wells to pump out more gas from their reserve.
Please send a message to the Ministry asking it to abandon its expansion plans and uphold laws protecting uncontacted tribes' rights.

If you'd like to send an email but don't have much time, click here to send a pre-written message.

If this doesn't work for you, you can use this text to send an email to the Minister at jmerino@minem.gob.pe:

Dear Minister Merino Tafur,

I am writing to ask you to put a stop to plans to expand the Camisea gas project further into the Nahua-Nanti Reserve for uncontacted tribes.

The spread of disease and forced contact are very real threats to the lives of uncontacted and isolated tribes; the lives of the oil workers are also at risk – many have been killed in the past by isolated Indians defending their territory.

It is unthinkable to allow gas workers into a territory that has been created to protect these vulnerable tribes, and it is impossible to ensure that contact does not occur. The expansion violates both Peruvian and international laws that protect the rights of uncontacted Indians.

The United Nations' Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has called for the immediate suspension of expansion plans due to the dangers the work would pose to the Indians' lives.

I urge you to prevent the expansion from going ahead and ensure that the land and lives of uncontacted Indians are protected.

Yours sincerely,

If you have five minutes, please write your own message. This is much more powerful.
