Pathway 1: Socially Responsible, Empowered
The award-winning Cochrane Sustainability Plan contains 13 Pathways to a sustainable future. Pathway 1 is all about being a socially responsible and empowered community. There are many ways to achieve this goal – from volunteering with local groups to voting in the October 18 election. Read more.


Cochrane Sustainability Plan Featured At Sustainable Cities Conference
This month, the Cochrane Sustainability Plan was featured at the Sustainable Cities Conference in Ottawa.  SPUR Chair Valerie McCracken was invited to share Cochrane’s experiences with the Plan’s development and implementation, in order to help other communities learn from our successes.  Read more.


Ambassadors Training September 27
It's not too late to become an Ambassador for the Cochrane Sustainability Plan! Our next training session is scheduled for September 27, offering a great chance to learn more about the Plan, and how to help others get involved.  Take note of the new venue for September 27 -- the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre's multi-purpose room.  Read more.


Spotlight On Our Champions:  Twisted Basil
As one of the newest Champions for the Cochrane Sustainability Plan, Twisted Basil is making a real difference across the community.  Besides providing good quality, affordable and safe food for area residents, they are helping local farmers ensure their produce gets to consumers.  Read more.

Progress toward the Cochrane Sustainability Plan is happening all across Cochrane, and much of the credit is due to our Sustainability Ambassadors.  Volunteers like Starr Kolb are showing their dedication to creating a sustainable future for Cochrane.  Read more.

In Our Community
October 18 is Election Day in Cochrane.  Taking part in the civic election is a great way to achieve our Pathway 1 targets – being a socially responsible and empowered community.  The Town of Cochrane website has helpful information on the election process.  The CSP target is to have 50 per cent voter turnout by 2013.

Recommended Resource
The Majestic Plastic Bag is a tongue-in-cheek video that helps remind us of the importance of limiting the use of plastic bags.  It’s amusing and informative at the same time, and should have you remembering your reusable shopping bags for your next trip to the grocery store.  You can view it on You Tube here, courtesy SPUR Board Member Clint Mulkholm.

CSP Welcomes New Champions
The number of Cochrane business and organizations committed to the Cochrane Sustainability Plan continues to grow.  Twisted Basil and the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sport Centre are the latest groups to join the ranks as Sustainability Champions.  Is your business or organization next?  You can sign up easily with our online form.

Sustainable Transportation
In late August, Cochrane hit the news in a CTV story about sustainable transportation.  Plans for a double-decker bus to aid the Cochrane-Calgary commute were big news.  The plan is to have a Cochrane commuter bus in place by September 2012.  Read more.
