MedStar NRH Rehabilitation Network has opened a new outpatient center in McLean, Virginia. The site, which began operations on February 3, offers one-stop shopping for comprehensive rehabilitation, including orthopaedic and neurology services. The new site also features specialty care delivered in partnership with orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

This site is the newest addition to MedStar NRH’s network of outpatient locations providing rehabilitation services closer to people’s home and work. It is one of 30 sites in a network that serves the greater Washington, D.C. and Maryland regions, including Northern Virginia. Other specialties at the site include sports medicine, focusing on early intervention after injury for amateur and professional athletes, as well as the development of training regimens to promote safe performance and prevent re-injury.

Additionally, the site features a runner’s clinic with gait analysis to diagnose any difficulties runners may be experiencing; the AlterG®, a high-tech, anti-gravity treadmill for those recovering from knee surgeries or who require rehabilitation from a running injury or pulled muscle; and concussion services for adults and children age 14 and older. Kathleen Fink, MD, one of Washingtonian magazine’s “top doctors,” who moved over to McLean from the NRH Rehabilitation Network, Bethesda site and works in tandem with physical and occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists to help meet patients’ needs.

“We believe this new site is a great addition to the MedStar NRH Network and will help us serve an ever-growing patient population in Northern Virginia,” said John Rockwood, MedStar NRH President & Senior Vice President, MedStar Health. John Brickley, vice president for Ambulatory Care Services and Network Development, says that a gap was recognized in specialty medical services in the McLean community. “We worked closely with MedStar Health and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to design a center that would provide a continuum of care, and include the services of rehabilitation experts and other specialists.”

Curtis Work Rehabilitation Services Earns CARF Re-accreditation and Maintains Exemplary Status

Curtis Work Rehab Services (CWRS), which is the only CARF accredited occupational rehabilitation program in Maryland, was awarded another full 3 years of accreditation based on the CARF survey conducted on April 4 and 5, 2013.

CARF accreditation is the highest endorsement this accreditation agency can award and ensures that CWRS at MedStar Union Memorial conforms to nationally and internationally recognized service standards.
The program received many accolades for its strengths, including these cited in the survey report:
“The CWRS work program demonstrates strong staff involvement in every area, including functional capacity evaluation (FCE), job simulation tasks, physical reconditioning and vocational assessment”
“Referral sources and other stakeholders consistently are very pleased with how CWRS communicates with them. The referral sources also consistently remark that, when they refer to CWRS, they know the client will be receiving the highest quality care available. ”
“CWRS is commended on the education offered, especially understanding and managing pain”
“The physicians who have referred to the CWRS program have stated that the care that is given to their clients is superior in quality.”
In addition, it was stated that exemplary conformance to standards was found in the following area:
“CWRS demonstrates a unique work hardening area. The job simulation area houses many distinct separate work cells, which can be adapted to many different kinds of job applications. The design of this space is truly state of the art. The entire work program has high ceilings and large windows with natural light and , overall, offers the person served with an atmosphere of healing.”
If you have any questions or would like a tour of CWRS, please call Donna Keegan, program coordinator, at 410 -554-2975.
