Innovative Technology From Nascott

Nascott Orthotics & Prosthetics is working with Boston Brace to provide innovative technology that provides another option to manage abnormal muscle tone and/or neurological dysfunction.  This new technology is known as Dynamic Movement Orthosis or DMO.

DMO is a lycra based orthotic that gives the patient some flexibility while at the same time maintaining a corrective fit.  As this orthotic is a soft brace, it can be worn under clothing thus making it more discreet and encouraging compliancy.

Patients are provided with a free evaluation to determine the medical necessity and efficacy of a Dynamic Movement Orthosis.  After which, patients are then measured, either by hand or use of a scanner, to ensure an intimate and proper fit.  Nascott practitioners have fit a wide range of DMO products, from bi-lateral gloves to help with supination or pronation to body suits to help with trunk stability.

National Rehabilitation Hospital
Driver Training Program

The National Rehabilitation Hospital's Driver Training Program Sponsored by GEICO specializes in teaching drivers with mobility, cognitive or visual impairments to drive with adaptive equipment or other adaptive strategies. As the only fully accessible driving program in the Metropolitan Washington Area, we have trained hundreds of impaired patients with alternative methods of safe driving. Many of our patients come to NRH for such training following a stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, arthritis, brain injury, cerebral palsy, MS, and issues related to aging.
NRH's Driver Training Program is licensed by the Maryland and District of Columbia Motor Vehicle Administrations. Training is provided by licensed occupational and physical therapists as well  as by a rehabilitation engineer. Our training staff members possess the certified driver rehabilitation specialist certificate of the Association of Driver Educators for the Disabled (ADED) and the assistive technology practitioner certificate issued by the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America (RESNA). We are also members of The National Mobility Equipment Dealer's Assn (NMEDA)

The program offers services ranging from pre-driving evaluations and education to assistance with purchasing adaptive equipment and vehicles. Services include:
  • Pre-driving evaluation to assess day and night vision, strength and coordination in one's arms and legs, ability to think and react quickly on the road, and basic knowledge of the most up-to-date driving rules and laws
  • On-the-road evaluation in NRH's car or fully-equipped, wheelchair-accessible van to assess the driver's ability to get in and out of the vehicle and to drive safely indifferent types of traffic
  • Pre-driving education for those who have had a stroke or brain injury
  • Training with the most up-to-date adaptive equipment to improve driving skills
  • Complete preparation for the state road test
  • Provision of a vehicle or special equipment for use in taking the state road test
  • Advice on how to adapt a vehicle to include special equipment such as hand controls, ramps, lifts, or special steering wheels
  • Advice on finding a place to buy special driving equipment and getting it installed correctly
  • Advice on financial assistance to adapt cars and vans to meet the individual's needs
  • Assistance with filling out forms to apply for a driver's license or changing a license to one that permits special equipment
