Starting a New IEP Advocacy Year: Back to School Tips

We are offering this event TWICE:
Tuesday, August 11th 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Wednesday, August 12th 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Free Event: Registration Required

You have had your annual review and wrote new goals for the coming year.  Now what???
Join us for a workshop on how to get the most out of your child's IEP this coming school year.  Learn how to interpret your child's IEP and partners with your school staff to ensure your child is making adequate progress toward the goals you have set.  Please bring your child's IEP.  This will be an interactive event presented by Linda Tortorelli & Shelia Krein and sponsered by TAP at UIUC.

For more information or to register contact: Linda Tortorelli at ltortore@illinois.edu or 217-244-0928

Summer at TAP
This summer we have been focused on maintaining operations to the best of our abilities.  As a state grant funded agency, we will not receive any funding until the state budget is passed.  Although we hope to be in the budget during the next fiscal year, at this time we are operating from donations.  We anticipate that we will be able to do so throughout the fall semester.

Although we have had reduced hours, we have still had fun this summer.  Our Social Thinking group lead by Joan
Gorsuch has been meeting with the help of our returning intern Alison Dey.  We have also been able to provide introductory trainings at Community Elements and Kevin Elliott Counseling Group

In August, look for us at the Urbana's Farmers Market.  We'll be in the last row (closet to the food trucks) with back to school resources, farmers market visual supports, and fun games.  We hope you'll stop by and say "hi."  We're also very excited about our IEP advocacy workshop (posted above).  We think it will be a great way to start the school year off on the right foot.

 Thinking About Fall

The Champaign Urbana Special Recreation (CUSR) fall program flyer is out.  There is an activity each day of the month so we hope you can find something up your alley.  Remember that you can also request accommodations for non-CUSR programs.

Registration begins August 11th for fall programs at the YMCA.  Did you know that the YMCA has sensory rooms?  These are for children who need a break from all the action or just a fun place to explore.

 Research Participation
Platform Health Project
Are you interested in having your own “cloud” where you can store all of your own or your child’s medical information? We need parents of children with disabilities to participate and give us feedback as we design this service.

We are computer science, engineering and design students who are working on this exciting project. We are creating a website called Platform Health, the first place for you to independently access and own all of your health records.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please contact Aaron Mann at:  aamann2@illinois.edu (student lead on the project)
