Air Force Association (AFA) Chapter 118 San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education invite you to our CyberPatriot Conference at the Joe Rindone Regional Technology Center, on Saturday, September 12, 2015 to learn about the CyberPatriot program and related National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. CyberPatriot is the short name for the National Youth Cyber Education Program.
The Conference Agenda will highlight:
CyberPatriot was created by the Air Force Association in 2009 to motivate our youth toward careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines vital to our nation’s future. The AFA in collaboration with county schools and youth serving organizations is interested in growing the program and increasing middle and high school age youth participation in the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. To find out more about the conference, please contact Larry Torres, AFA Chapter 118 VP, Programs at firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Background information on the program.
- Several speakers, including a representative from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) “Beyond the Bell†program. For the CyberPatriot VII competition, LAUSD entered approximately 150 teams, and 2 years ago a team from North Hollywood HS was a National Champion. The LAUSD representative will walk us through the competition and work through some of the problems presented to the teams in the competition images. Teams generally have coaches and mentors and there is a fee to enter. There are also minimum computing capability requirements. We will discuss all requirements and work to enable CyberPatriot teams by providing support, as required and able.
- Next steps in starting a CyberPatriot program for your school or organization.
Chapter 118 Announces Teachers of the Year
San Diego chapter 118 of the Air Force Association has identified three teachers of the year. This year we were fortunate to have nominations from elementary, middle and high schools. After review of all the applications the Teacher of the Year Committee selected one teacher from each level of school.
The Elementary School Teacher of the Year is Ms. Angela Truman, Calvary Christian Academy, in Chula Vista. Ms. Truman is a fifth-grade teacher. The committee considered Ms. Truman's approach to mathematics using Rock Unit core samples, as well as her participation in Math Olympics.
The Middle School Teacher of the Year is Ms. Kamphet Pease, Wilson Middle School, San Diego. The committee considered among other items Ms. Pease's being a strong STEM advocate and guiding and monitoring her students in the VEX Robot Competition; leading them to a win. Also, her mentorship for the San Diego Science Alliance Youth Space Institute program.
The High School Teacher of the Year is Ms. Carrie Northrum, San Ysidro High School, San Diego. The committee considered her development of excellent STEM lesson plans, participating in Exploring STEM Career Initiatives, obtaining NSF Grant, and time spent as a Robotics Coach in granting this honor. Ms. Northrum and Ms. Pease received their certificates at the May AFA General Membership meeting held at Filippi's Pizza Grotto, Kearny Villa Road on May 28, 2015. Ms. Truman attended the AFA Social on July31, 2015 and received her certificate at that venue.
Chapter 118 Social
San Diego Chapter 118 of the Air Force Association held a social meeting at the San Diego Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club on 31 July 2015. Those attending had an enjoyable evening of conversation, stories, and presentations. The prime rib steaks were done to perfection as each member who ordered steak cooked their own. Those who had the Philly cheese-steak sandwich really, really enjoyed the fare.
