Air Force Day with the Padres
The San Diego The San Diego Padres are a great supporter of the military in San Diego including our Air Force active duty, ROTC cadets and retired personnel. The team displayed that appreciation on August 31st by graciously donating 50 tickets to Chapter members.
While the team didn't win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, we did have a great time and great seats. Folks accepting the invitation got to see a pre-game ceremony swearing in the newest members of the Air Force as well. Our thanks go out again to the Padres organization for being a Community Partner to the Chapter and for their unwavering support to our military communities in San Diego.
2014 CAFA Convention.
The 2014 California Air Force Association (CAFA) Convention was held at Vandenberg AFB, CA from August 14-16, 2014. Chapter 266, the Robert Goddard Chapter, hosted the Convention for second year in a row and for the third time in the last 4 years.
At the Military Awards Banquet on Saturday evening, August 16th, we had the largest Chapter 118 contingent in recent memory. One reason for our large attendance was the number of awardees from San Diego. Specifically, CAFA honored our Chapter and Area 3 Teacher of the Year, Sandra Hodge; the CAFA AFROTC Cadet of the Year, Joshua Meersman, from SDSU; and the CAFA AFJROTC Cadet of the Year, Jessica Danga, from Mira Mesa High School. All received some impressive shadow box awards and Sandra also received another cash award.
In the future, Sandra plans on helping us with the CyberPatriot program, and she has already got us into one school board meeting. Chapter Vice President, Gene Alfaro’s presentation was well received by the school board. This approach will likely be our model for expanding the program in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Jessica will be a freshman at SDSU. She is undecided about her major. Whatever it is, we hope it includes the AFROTC program.
The new CAFA Officers for 2014-2015 are: Juan Cruz (Goddard Chapter 266), President; Martin Ledwitz (Schriever Chapter 147), Vice President and Area 3 Vice President; Rhoda Weiss (Doolittle Chapter 121) Secretary; and Leigh Kelly (Pete Knight Chapter 294) Treasurer.

Cadet Danga received the award from CAFA President Lee Barnby and guest speaker Chief Master Sergeant Barnby. Subsequently she was congratulated by Chapter 118 President Dick Jeffreys. Cadet Danga attended the award banquet with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Jose Danga and sister Alexandra.
Although not present at the banquet ROTC Cadet Joshua Meersman, Detachment 075, San Diego State University was proclaimed the California State ROTC Cadet of the Year.
