San Diego State University (SDSU) War Memorial Wreath-Laying Ceremony.
On Friday, November 13th Chapter President, Dick Jeffreys, attended the annual wreath laying ceremony to honor those SDSU alumni who paid the ultimate price in serving our Country.
For the 2nd year, Chapter 118 laid a wreath.
Major Derek Abbey (USMC Ret.) was the Keynote Speaker. He talked about his involvement with the Bent Prop Project and their annual trek to Palau to search for remains of U.S. service personnel.
Colonel Marty Wojtysiak (USAF Ret), former Commander of AFROTC Det 075 at SDSU, is the Chairman of the SDSU War Memorial Committee.
Bryan M. Smylie Guest Speaker at General Membership Meeting
The Chapter 118 General Membership Meeting was held on November 19, 2015 at Filippi's Pizza Grotto located on Kearney Villa Drive.
Our guest speaker was Major Bryan Smylie (USMC, Retired).
After the Pledge of Allegiance, Dick Jeffreys delivered a few opening remarks; then we enjoyed a dinner pizza and salad.
Dick introduced our guest speaker Major Bryan Smylie. Bryan is the San Diego Union-Tribune’s (U-T) Director of Military Liaison. He works with the U-Ts Circulation and Advertising Sales divisions, developing key relationships with military vendors, suppliers and organizations. He focuses his efforts on further solidifying the U-Ts outstanding reputation within the military community.
He stated when he was announced to fill this position: "I am pleased to be part of the U-T team, I look forward to working closely with my new colleagues to enhance our support for San Diegos vast military community."
Bryan holds a bachelors degree in industrial design from Western Michigan University and recently retired after a 20-year career in the Marine Corps.
Major Smylie expanded on his role at the U-T in reaching out to military and veteran organizations in the San Diego area. He concluded with some short stories of his experiences as a pilot for Marine One.
CyberPatriot VIII Activities.
The practice rounds are over and the competition rounds for CyberPatriot VIII have started. Sixty five teams from San Diego County schools and organizations registered for this competition.
The Chapter 118 Project Officer for CyberPatriot is U.S. Navy LTJG Sean White. One of his Navy specialties is cyber security. He is setting up training programs to help the teams with difficult areas such as Linux systems and networking.
We greatly appreciate Sean’s assistance and desire to help.
There is another cyber security competition in San Diego called the San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup Competition. It is sponsored by the Securing Our eCity (SOeC) Foundation. Since the goals of SOeC and CyberPatriot are the same (i.e., educating middle and high school aged students about cyber security), we developed a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate our education programs and competitions.
SOeC deconflicted the Mayor’s Cup and CyberPatriot competition schedules so more teams could compete in both events.
