Letters From Our Chapter & State Presidents

We will not have a General Membership Meeting this month (July 2014)

AFA Chapter 118 July Update and CAFA Convention Information
To All Chapter 118 Members:

We are halfway through July and rapidly moving towards the next California Air Force Association Convention.  We will be publishing newsletters in August, but I wanted to give you a heads up about the next 60 days.

We will not have a General Membership Meeting in July, and we have not been able to set up a General Atomics tour.  We will continue to work on that for August.

The CAFA Convention will be at Vandenberg AFB, CA for the second year in a row and for the third time in the last 4 years.  The first Convention event is a Social on the evening of Thursday, August 14th.  The Golf Tournament to benefit the CAFA Education for Aerospace Foundation will be held on Friday, August 15th.  The Business Meeting, CAFA Awards Luncheon, and Military Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, August 16th.

At the Banquet, we will be honoring our Chapter and Area 3 Teacher of the Year, Sandra Hodge;  CAFA AFROTC Cadet of the Year, Joshua Meersman, from SDSU; and CAFA AFJROTC Cadet of the Year, Jessica Danga, from Mira Mesa High School.  More details are included in the Invitation from CAFA President, Lee Barnby.

If you want to go, please let our President, Dick Jeffreys, know (858.829.3799 or rjeffreys2@san.rr.com).  If you need a ride, we will try and find one for you.

Sunday, August 31st, will be Air Force Day at the Padres.  We expect to receive some tickets, and they will be available on a first come-first served basis.  We will send sign-up information when we receive it.

Saturday, September 20th, we will be celebrating the Air Force Birthday at the Veterans Home in Chula Vista.  This is usually a well-attended event and includes AFSA Chapter 1365 and their Auxiliary.  We will send sign-up information when we have it.

At our September General membership Meeting, we will be electing Chapter Officers for 2014-2015.  We will include information on open positions in the August newsletters.

Please have a safe and enjoyable summer.  We will see you in September, if not at one of the event before that.

Dick Jeffreys
President

“The Force behind the Force”                                                          13 Jul 2014

Dear Friends,

As you know, the Air Force Association (AFA) is an independent, non-profit organization promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the nation.  Our mission is to promote a dominant USAF and a strong national defense, and to honor Airmen and our Air Force heritage.  To do this, we:  1) Educate the public on the critical need for unmatched aerospace power and a technically superior workforce to ensure U.S. national security; 2) Advocate for aerospace power and STEM education; and 3) Support the total Air Force family, and promote aerospace education.

Our annual CAFA State Convention, to be held at Vandenberg AFB from 14-16 Aug, plays a key role in honoring our Airmen and supporting the technical education of our youth.

We invite you to participate in any of the events to be conducted at the Convention.  They include:

  • Icebreaker:  14 Aug, 1700, Far West Tavern in Old Orcutt.  This casual event provides an opportunity to get to know the Convention participants, especially those who arrive Thursday in advance of the Friday Golf Tournament.

  • Charity Golf Tournament:  15 Aug, 1230 shotgun start, Vandenberg Village Country Club.  Registration begins at 1100.  This fundraiser provides the means for CA AFA’s annual scholarships and cash awards to the 3 individuals selected as CA AFA’s Teachers of the Year.  Entry in the tournament includes the Santa Maria Tri-Tip BBQ that follows.

  • Santa Maria Tri-Tip BBQ Dinner:  15 Aug, 1730, Vandenberg Village Country Club.  Santa Maria is famous for its Tri-Tip, and no one prepares it better than the Sage Restaurant at the Country Club.  While the dinner is included in the Golf Tournament registration, non-golfers can sign up just for the dinner.

  • Business Meeting:  16 Aug, 0800-1600 Vandenberg AFB Pacific Coast Club.  The Business Meeting will include CA AFA Officer Reports, workshops, and other discussions.  Additionally, elections of CA AFA Officers for the next operating year are conducted.  Dress is business casual or UOD.

  • CA AFA Awards Luncheon:  16 Aug, 1130-1300, Vandenberg AFB Pacific Coast Club.  CA AFA awards will be presented to AFA volunteers from throughout the state’s 18 Chapters.  Dress is business casual or UOD.  Guest speaker will be Col Max Lantz, 381st Training Group Commander.

  • CA AFA Military Awards Banquet:  16 Aug, 1800-2100, Vandenberg AFB Pacific Coast Club.  The Military Awards Banquet is the highlight of the Convention.  CA AFA presents annual awards to the top military performers from throughout the state in each of the AF’s components.  Additionally, we will present awards to the top AFROTC, AFJROTC, and CAP cadet in the state.  Dress is Mess Dress, sermi-formal (enlisted), or Business Formal.  Guest speaker will be CMSgt Chris Barnby, 403rd Wing (AFRC) Command Chief.

You may register for Convention events on the Goddard Chapter website, www.goddard266.org.  We hope you can join us at 1 or more of the activities.  Please contact me at lbarnby@verizon.net or 805-863-3690 if you have any questions or problems with the registration process.  Thanks in advance for your support!

Regards,

//Signed//
