Hello Spring

A Love Letter from Lustre

Hello Spring Love,

I am always grateful when the cold dissipates and starts to fade away and it doesn't get dark at 5:30PM. I started this letter without any inspiration and then I thought about what a big deal an equinox is and what spring means to me and all of the songs about spring. So, these thoughts of mine are wrapped around and with other very eloquent lyrics of songs that tell Lustre's story, never in a straight line but twisting through the newsletter while evoking others' beautiful words to spread the news. ”Waiting For the Sun,” by The Doors penetrates my consciousness and my dark emo spirit that I have had since I was a child. Jim Morrison wanted to evoke joy in this song and it does that for me and has since the first time I heard it the same as a bunch of wildflowers does coming from Clive.

Spring is in the air. Put your sniffer on it. Flowers in bloom, pollen will dust everything in a wasabi shade of green like a light snow dusting a couple of times and we will all complain about our allergies. We can hang the heavy clothes and coats we just stopped wearing on the Peloton bike we lost interest in the second week we had it delivered and get on with the lives we are living.

The Sun will cross the equator line, heading north, marking the start of spring around March 21 in our parts (that would be Austin, Texas). March ushers in the spring equinox when the sun crosses the equator and day and night everywhere are close to the same length. An equinox has always been a joyful time of the year to me. It excites me. Different moons, the harvest, the supermoon, the pink, and the blue moon all make me want to sleep outside so that I can witness their reverence and power.

Florence and The Machine’s “Rabbit Heart," sets the scene in my mind of a full strawberry moon in the background of a navy velvet night where a ritual of cowardice and strength happens while giving up your timid rabbit heart while having the courage to dare to have a lion's heart. “Rabbit Heart” reminds me to be brave— when things get complicated.

“Here I am, a rabbit hearted girl
Frozen in the headlights
It seems I've made the final sacrifice
We raise it up, this offering
We raise it up
This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight
I look around, but I can't find you (raise it up)
If only I could see your face (raise it up)
Instead of rushing towards the skyline (raise it up)
I wish that I could just be brave
I must become a lion hearted girl
Ready for a fight
Before I make the final sacrifice
We raise it up, this offering
We raise it up
This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight.”

I am always ready for the gold and the sunlight and to raise it UP! Bring on the weather that we all love that gets the party started with SXSW and St. Patrick's Day. We will be celebrating all of our grandiose revelry on Rainey Street. Stay tuned for more details.
There are so many things that have happened recently with DunlapATX and we have so much to look forward to. Clive, the oldest bar on Davis Street and second on Rainey (Lustres’ lover) reintroduced himself to us—finally. He is quite the handsome gentleman that he always was but now he is a handsome beast. Go check out his moves. I think you will like his style. I have a reason to put a song to all of these spring thoughts and memories—past and future. Lustre loves Waylon Jennings “Macarthur Park” for Clive. She dedicates it to him now and forever. The challenges we faced as he transformed himself. Despite being extremely demanding, he has brought us a lot of joy and intrigue and he is just getting started—again!
Lustre Pearl South will be celebrating her first anniversary on March 20, 2022. Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” comes to mind and Lustre used to sing this back in 2009 at Lustre Pearl OG at night with her house band when she was the only bar on the block…

“Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
I'm feeling good
Fish in the sea
You know how I feel
River running free
You know how I feel
Blossom on a tree
You know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good.”
Lustre Pearl Rainey will celebrate thirteen years on Rainey on March 5, 2022. Which reminds me of SXSW and Lustre Pearl celebrating the early years on Rainey Street. The Avett Brothers played one of Lustre's first SX in 2009  and “A Fathers First Spring" will take the fogginess out of anyone's heart with these lyrics about spring and a new parents' love…
“Was the blood on the floor and the love in your yell
I was a child before
The day that I met Elenor
The kiss of the wind in the hills
The clearness of morning, the late evening thrill
Blurry and grey like the roar
The wheels of the highway, above them I soar
When I’m in my sweet daughter’s eyes
My heart is ruined for the rest of all life
There’s no part of it left to give
There’s no part of it left to give.”
Prose at it’s finest. It is not what they played at Lustre in 2009, but I love it and it makes me happy when children bring unconditional love into their new parents’ hearts.
With new life there is always death. There will not be a funeral per say, but Container Bar will be closing, not without a supreme blowout soiree. Come help commemorate all the fun you had there with us on March 27, 2022. No need to bring a casserole and a sad face. We are going to give her the outstanding bash to honor her seductive foxiness and her rowdy spirit. “Blister in the Sun,” by the Violent Femmes has its own beautiful cult style words and violent cadence which makes me want to dance and party and sing the lyrics loudly. Lustre always wants to celebrate and party. This is a perfect farewell song to Container Bar. RIP Container Bar you are loved, you are a huge pain in the ass and I have already shed my tears over you so I can promise there will be none. What happened at Container Bar is a phantasmagoria of champagne, dancing and the dreamy ruminative sounds of DJ Mighty Mike. What a ride she has been. Another one. Hands up as the coaster tetters and then drops deep and fast. Keep your hands up so you can feel the rise as you haul ass down. This is the last Container Bar version 1.0 you will ride.
We are still working on opening Lustre Pearl Portland on Mississippi Avenue. Like everything in this life, nothing ever happens or moves in a precise planned logical motion. It is all or nothing. Mechanical energy—the energy stored in moving objects. Obviously, I am not well versed in mechanical engineering but I know energy and how it feels and it is my turn for Portland to start so that she can fly and show Portland what she is made of. Bring it. We are ready to introduce ourselves. Pink Floyd “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.” Turn this up. Real up. LOUD up. It should get someone's attention. It is eerie and dark. Just the way I like it. For the encore it would be Lauryn Hill’s, “To Zion.” This is something else we are waiting for that is a huge deal. Come on Portland!
We also have crawfish boils, mosquitos, sunsets, bats on a bridge, Barton Springs swimming weather and dry humid heat and rain storms ahead of us. All good. Everything that brings people to Austin in droves.
We have a couple of secrets too that we are working on… Got to keep a poker face or no one would have anything to talk about or work to do.
Life has been good, better than good, life spits glitter on us most days at the Galactic Headquarters of DunlapATX and this sunshine is going to make it even better. Don’t think for a minute we aren't resilient and tough muthas working in The DunlapATX Galactic Headquarters and bars, because we are. We just don’t lie down, we persist and finish strong. We get it done and then the glitters falls (insert your favorite song here). At DunlapATX we are stronger than most. We come together and get things done. It, we, us are a big deal—our team. For everyone and everything, I am always grateful. Thank you DunlapATX family and friends that support us always and throughout the years.
“Sun is Shining" by Bob Marley, is a reminder, and should also be played loudly (I like all music loudly) that we can put the cold weather and dark past behind us and write a new chapter, start a new love story and enjoy a new episode or phase everyday we rise:
“When the morning gather the rainbow
Want you to know I am a rainbow too
To the rescue here I am
Want you to know
Sun is shining
The weather is sweet now
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue
Here I am
Want you to know just if you can”
All my love from my black heart,
