YOUTUBE PICK OF THE WEEK

TIMELAPSE OF THE FUTURE: A JOURNEY TO THE END OF TIME

We start in 2019 and travel exponentially through time, witnessing the future of Earth, the death of the sun, the end of all stars, proton decay, zombie galaxies, possible future civilizations, exploding black holes, the effects of dark energy, alternate universes, the final fate of the cosmos - to name a few.

This is a picture of the future as painted by modern science - a picture that will surely evolve over time and new puzzle pieces are still waiting to be found. The future may look bleak, but we have enormous potential as a species.

Featuring the voices of David Attenborough, Brian Cox and Stephen Hawking, among many others.

REBECCA RECOMMENDS: NICK CAVE'S THE RED HAND FILES

Electric Palace cinema director and co-founder Rebecca recommends:

"For Nick Cave fans and everyone else this is really worth a look. Cave has invited people to send him questions that he answers and these are simply shared on this website.
'You can ask me anything... there will be no moderator. This will be between you and me. Let’s see what happens.'"

It is a growing treasure trove of letters to the world; there are quiet reflections from both sides of these conversations. There is a sense of compassion and love here, through a medium renowned for its ability to spread division. Cave is sharing an example of how to use the web beyond the hubbub of social media, to engage in more rewarding conversations. It is a really fascinating and lovely thing.

THEMED PLAYLISTS from The Centre for Screen Cultures

When it comes to finding something to watch, the sheer amount of options can be overwhelming. For this reason, The Centre for Screen Cultures is producing themed playlists of film, video, and television so you can organise your own series to watch at home (or home school).

Choose from ideas such as ‘Mediating Motherhood’, ‘APOCALYPSE FROM THE MARGINS’, ‘SEVEN FILMS BY WOMEN FROM SWEDEN’ and many more. You can even submit your own themed playlist!

THE LAST THURSDAY FILM CLUB PICKS...

Another intriguing and fascinating regular pick by The Last Thursday Film Club. Dr Reekie from the club suggests:

"One of the great treasures of the web is the incredible Internet Archive, which includes the the online Prelinger Archive, a collection of more than 6,000 public domain films available to download, sample and mashup. It features an amazing range of public information films, corporate marketing and political propaganda, plus some hidden underground gems. I recently stumbled upon a full high-quality copy of James Bidgood’s queer classic ‘Pink Narcissus’."

STAR CITY MONOLOGUES FROM VOLUNTEER JOHN KNOWLES

One of our volunteers, John Knowles, also runs our regular First Heard play reading evenings. Here's one of John's latest projects:

"Over lockdown I've been writing monologues and creating pieces to do with isolation and my interest in Eastern Europe and Russia. Star City is the first in the line up and is now live. It contains seven monologues all based on characters linked to Star City in Russia, some real, some... not. I thought you might like to see them."
