Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Day on Saturday and helped to make the many new families welcome. The atmosphere was buzzing with many workshops for the children to enjoy, tasty dishes from our menus on offer, and our sporting and musical provision showcased outside and in the Prep Hall. But the half term excitement didn't end there: the Prep Choir joined the Senior School Choir at the Autumn Concert on Tuesday evening, the PTA Halloween disco was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and today we celebrated Harvest Festival with Reverend Beverley.
We are extremely proud to announce that the school has been shortlisted in the Arts category in this year's Educate Awards, which celebrate excellence in schools across the area. Congratulations to Mr Thomas and all our students and staff who put together our Prep Musical last year: good luck!

Bees have loved mixing paints with toy cars and playing with the diggers in the mud, sand, and cereal. They have been sharing and socialising well with the boats and the ducks in the water tray.
In Ladybirds, we have been exploring under the sea, and have incorporated mathematics into our activities introducing size, shapes and counting in sequence.
In Reception, our focus text this week was a book called 'Leaf Man': the children were fascinated by the outside cover and tried to predict what the book might be about. We successfully created our own ideas using leaves, conkers, twigs, conker shells and sycamore keys. We have also been rather busy planting pansies in our new play area.

In Year 1, the children have created a word bank of adventurous adjectives and verbs to help them write Autumn poetry. To do this, they have been busy launching seeds and leaves to find the right movement vocabulary. In their Science lessons, they have used the Venn Diagram format to sort Autumn treasures using criteria such as ‘is it spiky?’, ‘is it curved’, ‘is it golden?’
Mrs Smith and Mrs Brooker
Year 2 have worked hard to develop their writing, analysing the text of 'Little Red Reading Hood' this week. I have been very impressed with their improvement in writing this half term and how determined the children have been to develop their sentences. In Maths, we have been focusing on shape, and in Science, we have been learning all about growth and development.
Winnie and her Mum returned to Lytham for the weekend and visited us at school. Winnie brought us some Dutch caramel waffles for us to try: they were delicious! We had a lovely morning together in the classroom and everyone wanted to sit with Winnie at lunchtime as they had all missed her.
In Year 4 this week we have been looking at Mayan calendars: did you know they had four different calendars? We have looked at the Tzolkin calendar which had 13 x 20 = 260 days a year.
In Maths, we have been studying negative numbers and have really enjoyed this topic learning about the term 'minus' and how zero behaves on the number line as well as the vocabulary associated with negative numbers.
This week in Year 5 saw the children drawing their Rousseau-inspired tigers onto coloured paper; the results were amazing!
On Thursday we visited the Rossall Space Centre where we enriched our science knowledge. Nick Lister, the resident astronomer, was so inspiring and the visit to the planetarium was a lot of fun!
Mrs Whitaker and Mr Worthington
Congratulations Year 6, you have soldiered on with your learning either in school or at home in the most challenging conditions. You have shown great determination and motivation all week. Both Mr Rice and myself have been so impressed with the quality of work you have produced across all subject areas, especially the project work in Science and Humanities.
Mr Avis and Mr Rice
We took part in the AJIS U8 Tag Rugby Festival at Manchester Grammar School: well played boys!
Music and Drama News
The Prep School Choir sang beautifully on Tuesday night as they joined the Senior School to sing in the Autumn Music Concert. Senior School parents were impressed and Mr Thomas was very proud of your enthusiastic and committed performance. Keep up the great work!
This week in Drama, Years 3 and 4 both performed their Roald Dahl-inspired scenes in the Senior School Drama Studio. Mr Thomas and Miss Worthington were very impressed how the characters were brought to life and the groups worked brilliantly together to create stunning scenes from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'James and the Giant Peach'. Well done everyone!
Mr Thomas and Miss Worthington
The children in Year 3 have been learning about Gustav Klimt. They discovered how Klimt's father was a gold engraver: gold was a colour that the artist loved and used in many of his paintings.
They also saw how Klimt's portraits were almost completely dominated by patterns in shades of yellow, orange, reds, and browns, not forgetting his favourite gold!
PTA Halloween Party
Jordanna and her PTA team should be commended for organising a super exciting Halloween disco! Thank you all very much indeed.
Christmas Card Competition
Mad Science led an assembly this week to take us on a ‘Mission To Mars'.
We discussed the laws of gravity and aerodynamics of rocket ships. After Christmas, Mad Science will be delivering a club on Fridays after school, so be sure to sign up!
Mr Worthington, Science Co-ordinator
