Free outdoor summer concerts

To celebrate summer in Subiaco we’re bringing eight free outdoor concerts to beautiful parks and reserves across the city.

Get festive this Sunday with a jazzy twist on your favourite Christmas carols featuring graduates from WAAPA. Ruby and the Remedy will dust off the old vinyls and belt out your favourite 60s funk and jazz hits, while they deck the halls with Christmas carols and other festive entertainment.

Pack a picnic basket and bring the family down to Theatre Gardens from 5pm to join the festivities.

Rokeby Road old and new

Take a trip down memory lane from 1900 to 1958 and rediscover the confectioners, grocers, and family businesses that thrived in Subiaco’s busy shopping district during the tram era.

Do you remember buying sweets or postcards from Cadman’s Corner? Did Cull Radio repair your old wireless between 1935 and 1987? Did Gilbert or Bruce fill your prescriptions at Illsley Pharmacy when it traded on the corner of Rokeby and Heytesbury Roads for over 50 years?

In 1914 Rokeby Road housed more than 100 businesses including bootmakers, small goods merchants, wine distributers and tobacconists (pictured below). Find out who traded where and when at Subiaco Museum's new exhibition Trams and Trade: Rokeby Road 1900-1958 on display now.

Summer in Subiaco

Subiaco residents know how to enjoy the summer months. This image from 1925 shows students from Rosalie School taking swimming lessons at Nedlands Baths.

Subi residents often frequented the foreshore and baths to cool off on hot days, riding the tram from the top of Rokeby Road to Nedlands. Children could purchase a tram ticket and entry into the baths for threepence which would be the equivalent of 98 cents today.

Find out more about Subiaco trams at the museum's Trams and Trade exhibition.
