On the Similarities between a Prospective Client Meeting and a Job Interview
Having spent most of 2009 looking for a conventional job, I recently began drawing quite a few parallels between the job interview process and prospective client meetings.
In both situations I do an extensive background sweep online to learn everything I can about the person I’m meeting with and their business. They want to know that you’ve done your homework. It also helps the “trust” factor if you can find some type of personal common ground which usually comes out on their social media profiles.
At the end of both of these types of meetings, I like to talk about the timeline for the next step. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind as to how this relationship is to move forward…or not. The worst situation is one in which neither party has a firm grasp as to what’s going on.
I recently finished Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind through my local Business Book Club. Daniel Pink made some poignant points about our future. Can you say, “Abundance, Asia and Automation”?
Pink argues that the future of commerce and everyday life belongs to the right-brain thinkers. If your business involves: Abundance (consumers have too many choices, nothing is scarce), Asia (everything that can be outsourced, is) and Automation (computerization, robots, technology, processes), then you need to add right-brained value to your offering in order to be competitive in the near future. Creativity will become the competitive difference.
