Book Review: Rework

L-O-V-E-D it. Rework is the second book written by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, aka the founders of 37Signals. (Getting Real was their first).

From the book jacket:

Rework shows you a better, easier way to succeed in business. Read it and you’ll know why plans are actually harmful, why you don’t need outside investors and why you’re better off ignoring the competition. The truth is, you need less than you think. You don’t need to be a workaholic. You don’t need to staff up. You don’t need to waste time on paperwork or meetings. You don’t even need an office. Those are all just excuses.

Use Email Marketing and Social Media As Part Of An Integrated Marketing Strategy

Constant Contact examined results data from small businesses and nonprofits that have combined their email marketing with social media marketing to those using only email marketing. Key findings include:

  • Higher click-through rates: The average click-through rate for those using both email and social media marketing was 59.3 basis points higher than for those using email only.

Should We Have Multiple Company Bloggers?
The multiple blogger strategy
  • Fits well with traditional organizational structures, i.e. “the blog is run by our PR team”
  • Shines a light on the many voices/talents in your company
  • Distributes the workload and is the best opportunity for frequent, consistent content
  • People commit to contributing and then back out
  • Management can be difficult
  • Less flexibility when married to a schedule
  • Difficult to establish a real community
The single blogger strategy
  • Spotlighting the voice of a natural communicator as the voice of authority
  • Able to humanize the brand and create customer dialogue
  • Having a single point of responsibility ensures that the job is going to get done
  • Risky putting all of your eggs in one blogging basket
  • Funding a dedicated blogger may be impractical
  • Could limit the scope/variety of content you deliver
