MWM: How Do You Do IT?

Question of the Month:
How Do You Do It?
Here is a funny thing: despite being the founder of a growing national initiative called Mothers Who Make, I still don’t really know how anyone else does it - how they mother, how they make. It strikes me that this is another parallel between mothering and making – they are both intensely private activities. There are thousands of books that tell me how I should be mothering. There are another thousand that tell me how to make, how to be an artist, how to write my novel. Yet despite all these books, many of which I have gone out and bought, I still do not really know how other mothers mother and other makers make.

SAVE THE DATE! Nov 30th and Dec 1st

We are excited to announce an Open Space and our commissioned artists’ sharing. Our first national Open Space event will take place on Nov 30th 1.30pm-4.30pm at Shakespeare’s Globe, as part of Improbable’s Devoted and Disgruntled programme - full invitation coming soon….. And on December 1st we will hold a sharing of our MWM commissions – full details to follow…..
A few other MWM dates for your diaries

Mothers Who Make have been invited to hold a Q&A event at The Affordable Arts Fair on October 20th.

We will have a stall on November 17th at the Being Human Festival day in celebration of Motherhood and Making at the V&A Musuem of Childhood.

Also there is a special opportunity happening for mothers/ makers in Exeter:

Exeter MWM is hosting a contemporary dance Wild Women workshop by Chhaya Collective on Tuesday 23rd October (half term) at Exeter Phoenix, 9.15-10.45am. Children (of any gender) are welcome to accompany you, take part, play near by, sleep etc in this one off workshop especially for MWM. It's the usual MWM price of £3/5. If you'd like to attend just drop a line to
In other news our crowdfunding rewards are ready!!!
If you supported us way back in December you will at long last be able to receive your crowdfunding rewards: badges, bags and T-shirts have been made. Lizzy, MWM’s producer, helped hand-print the bags and T-shirts herself. The design on them is thanks to Julia Labutina’s mothering and making self-portrait. You can read more about Julia in the ‘mother of the month’ section on our website here.

From our friends
We need your love and support to open the first permanent Mother House Studio.

The Mother House is the world's first affordable artists studio model with integrated childcare, where children are welcome into the work space.

The model is a unique solution to a proven lack of viable provision that sufficiently supports the professional development and wellbeing of artists during early motherhood. Career development, more representation for women in the arts and creative industries, mental health and community are all aspects that this model can improve and foster.

The Mother House crowdfund campaign is part of 'Crowdfund London' funds scheme on Spacehive. The Major of London will pledge up to £50.000 per selected project. The more pledges and page likes The Mother House page has, the more we are likely to be noticed between other 100s of projects.
