Move to AusCycling

You will have seen the communication from Cycling ACT and from other channels that we will transition to AusCycling on the 1st of November this year. An AusCycling member FAQ is available here.

https://www.auscycling.org.au/member-faq/

One of the implications of the transition is that the Canberra Cycling Club component of your membership fee will reduce from $65 to $25.

In parallel to this we have been running our winter road races at less than break even. This has been for a number of reasons, including kickstarting racing after the COVID break and ensuring we have had a winter road program.

The upshot of this is that we will have to raise race entry fees for future race seasons to cover both reduced membership receipts and the increased costs of running the winter road program. This will be to ensure that our activities as a club remain financially viable. The modelling and decision making around this review will occur over the coming months.

If you would like to be involved in the decision making process please get in touch. We have vacant places on the CCC committee and in working groups that support the committee.

Volunteer for the club

Thank you to all of the club volunteers who operate silently behind the scenes to keep the club ticking over. We couldn’t run without you.

We will shortly be releasing an updated volunteer policy for member review and feedback. Stay tuned for more information.

Our current policy is available on the website. We expect that active racing members volunteer at least once a season. In addition to our volunteer program for the winter road season, we approach members directly with requests for them to volunteer at our races. If you are nominated to volunteer at a race please respond promptly. If you are unable to volunteer on the date requested please let us know an alternative date that would suit.

To recognise the contribution our volunteers make we are trialling a volunteer roster. You can see the roster here.

Winter Road Volunteer Benefits

The 2020 Winter Road season is run by volunteers from the CCC and VCC. This season volunteers will be recognised with free entry to all eligible events in the Winter Road Calendar.

As well as making our events happen, you’ll be eligible for free entries into winter road events.

Click here for full details and to nominate to volunteer.

Call for Commissaires

As you may be aware Cycling ACT recently put the call out for new commissaires. Our small pool of commissaires had become even smaller, with COVID-19 limiting those who were able to attend events.

Racing in the ACT was under threat - without commissaires, races couldn’t go ahead.  There was a great response to the call for new commissaires, with 5 CCC members and 6 from Vikings putting up their hand to undertake training. Many of these volunteers have completed the theoretical component, and you may have seen them at events, gaining some practical experience prior to their final assessment. We hope to see these people gain their Level 1 accreditation in the near future.

If anyone else is interested in becoming a commissaire, they are strongly encouraged to do so.  Commissairing is yet another volunteer role, so let’s spread the load and get as many qualified as possible. If you can’t commit to becoming a commissaire, please make sure you volunteer in another capacity. Without volunteers, racing won’t happen, and it’s not fair to leave the workload to the same few every time.

Cycling ACT thanks those people who have embarked on their commissaire accreditation, and welcomes anyone who wants to make a start now. Please email them at act.info@cycling.org.au for more information.

Volunteer Resources

To assist Race Directors and other volunteers understand what’s involved we have developed a Race Director guide (and supporting checklists) and will shortly be publishing this information (plus more) to the website.

From the Race Secretary

Updates

Due to changes in the racing calendars of NSW and Victoria due to COVID we have had to make a few adjustments to ours as well.

The most significant is the change of date for the ACT hill climb championship. We have moved it to the date we had intended to hold the club championship to avoid a conflict with the NSW championship. We have also decided that as many will want to compare themselves against previous efforts  we will use the  Cotter/Stromlo course.

Just a reminder that we do have our next race coming up very soon and hope to see you all out there.

Next Season

While the current road season has seen a few ups and downs it has seen a good deal of support from members based on the numbers.

To carry this on next year we have begun the process to build a calendar for next year. To do this we need some feedback from the members.

While there are a couple of areas in specific we would like your thoughts on feel free to include any comments or ideas.
  • Do you like the format of longer races?
  • Would the inclusion of some shorter races during the crit season interest you?
  • Do you have any thoughts on a new course that you would like to see?
Please email racing@canberracyclingclub.org.au if you would like to contribute.
