Christine's Last Corner

After two and a half years as Executive Director for Join the Journey, I am stepping down on October 3, 2016 to prepare for my family’s cross-country move in spring 2017.

My husband’s residency in radiology brought us to Mayo Clinic; and his new employment at the completion of his fellowship this spring, will bring us to our new home in Arizona.

When I started as Executive Director for Join the Journey in February of 2014, I was excited to be returning to the non-profit sector, but I was not prepared for what this organization would mean to me. My previous experience had been with a very large, international non-profit. I was one cog in a large wheel, working as Associate Editor in a Publications Department. Being a part of Join the Journey and getting to wear so many hats and to personally see the change this organization makes in the lives of survivors and their families has been incredible. I have made wonderful friends, and met countless amazing individuals. Working with Join the Journey means interacting with the best people in the world – generous donors and sponsors; hard-working and kind volunteers; supportive caregivers; and courageous and inspiring survivors.

I have learned so much as Executive Director, and I am so thankful to the Join the Journey family for giving me this opportunity. Join the Journey will always have a special place in my heart.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I will see everyone at the 2016 Walk!

And now on to my next adventure . . .

President's Thoughts
Goodbye summer, hello fall!  While summer has its wonderful qualities with lush green foliage, warm sunny days and campfires at night, fall has its own special qualities and advantages that can’t be rivaled.  When we embrace fall, we embrace the transformation of colors from green to shades of orange, gold, brown and red.  It is a season of renewal we can all appreciate when we cherish what it truly has to offer. Take time to celebrate the magic of autumn this season.

It has been another busy but fun summer for everyone involved with Join the Journey. All of our many volunteers were out and about in the community at several events promoting breast cancer awareness.  We started the season with the Rochesterfest parade. It was a gorgeous night with one of the largest crowds I can remember. You may have also seen the Making Waves team paddling on Silver Lake in the Dragon Boat on Wednesday evenings. We have been so pleased to see many new faces paddling with us this year!  Paddling will continue until mid-September, weather permitting. Come join us!

In addition to the community events, we participated in Pink Out at Deer Creek again this year. What a great event!! Hundreds of fans attended in pink to increase awareness for breast cancer and over $11,000 was raised in support of local breast cancer survivors! There was a moving opening ceremony to honor survivors and anyone who had been touched by breast cancer. Thanks to National Fleet Graphics, many cars were wrapped in pink for the event. An autographed, pink-ribbon flag and four NASCAR tickets (courtesy of the Wasmund Family and Med-City Collision) were auctioned off at the event. Auctioneer Greg Jensen also auctioned off his own race car and donated $1,300 of the proceeds to Join the Journey. In addition, we held a 50/50 raffle, which raised $1,472! Join the Journey sold a variety of pink-ribbon merchandise from Side Out Rochester at the event, as well as pink water bottles donated by Med-City Collision. Deer Creek Speedway/the Queensland Family also helped raise money at the event by hosting a silent auction and by pumping up racers in a push-up challenge (sponsors donated $1 for every push-up). The passion of the Deer Creek fans and sponsors for Join the Journey's cause was heartfelt and moving, and the energy at the event was phenomenal! 2017 promises to be even better, so you won’t want to miss this action-packed day in support of breast cancer survivors. Fun for the whole family!

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that our Executive Director Christine Fredriksen will be leaving Join the Journey.  Her last day is October 3, 2016. Christine has been a strong leader, strengthening Join the Journey, building relationships in the community and moving us forward in so many ways. While she will be sorely missed, I am so happy for her and her family as they move on to the next chapter of their lives. Christine’s husband, Jason, finished his residency at Mayo Clinic and has secured a job as a radiologist in Arizona. Please join me in thanking her for her many contributions to Join the Journey and wishing her and her family all the best in their new endeavor. She will be at the Join the Journey Walk in September so come help us give her the send-off she deserves!

Speaking of the walk, with fall fast approaching we are all gearing up for our biggest fundraising event of the year, the 12th Annual Join the Journey Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Sunday, September 18th.  The walk generates the majority of the money that supports our programs such as Pink Ribbon Mentors, Making Waves, Chemo Care, Book Program, Moonlight Pillows, and Support Group. All of the money raised stays here in the local community. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to support these and other important programs.  Unfortunately, last year we fell short. Please visit our website, www.jointhejourney.us to register for the Walk or to donate. Gather your friends and family to raise money and walk together as a team to help us reach our goal. I look forward to seeing you and promise it will be a terrific event!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who spend countless hours sharing their time and talents to make Join the Journey the successful organization that it is. We are so grateful for all of you!

Remember to take time to enjoy the magic of fall, and I will see you all at the Walk on September 18th. Thanks again for an awesome year!

Making Waves, a floating fellowship
By Sue Whitcomb

Making Waves is in the boat! How true this is during the warm months of summer and into the fall. It is amazing that, despite the many hot and muggy Wednesday evenings we’ve had this summer, there was always a breeze to cool us out on Silver Lake. Or maybe it is because we are talking and laughing that we simply aren’t bothered by the heat. Or maybe it is because we have been busy making friends with all of the new people that have joined our paddling that we do not notice any discomfort. Or maybe it is just the magic of dragon boating that helps us focus on the positives in our lives that makes other things seem minor.

We have had regular after-paddling outings to area restaurants to continue the fun and to celebrate birthdays. Rumor has it that after the season is over, we will check out the Escape Games in Rochester. Take a peek at their website to get an idea of what the experience is like. Making Waves was also part of Olmsted County’s Relay for Life where, once again, our pulled-pork sandwiches on pink buns were a hit.

We have participated in a number of races this summer, both as a team and individually. Recently at the Fort Dodge, IA Dragon Boat Bash, Making Waves combined with Breast of Friends from Dubuque, IA with amazing results. Between our first race and our third race, we shaved 12 seconds off of our race time, which is a remarkable improvement. Our time was very close to the team that came in third.

In September, we will have the bittersweet experience of attending the Dragon Boat Festival in Dubuque, IA. That festival is always a blast because the Dubuque team, Breast of Friends, is a lively group with a collective outrageous sense of humor. This year, the experience will be tempered by the loss of their teammate, Susie Freese, who passed away August 9 after battling a recurrence of breast cancer for eight years. Susie was a gentle soul who loved dragon boating; she was honored by her team mates who formed a paddle arch for people to walk through as they left her funeral service. As her teammate Bonnie aptly said “Fly high, Susie.” We will miss her.

At the Join the Journey Walk on September 18, Making Waves will once again be offering rides on our boat, Waves of Hope. If you have never been out with us before, this is a great time to get a crash course in dragon boat paddling and etiquette before heading out on Silver Lake to use your newfound skills. And best of all, a ride on the dragon boat counts as one lap of walking around Silver Lake. Come join us!

Join the Journey 12th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

“Life is Sweet” is the theme for this year’s Walk and it will be so sweet to have you join us! This year’s Walk Chairs, Crystal Kittridge and Tanya Strasser, have been working hard to plan all the details for another fantastic event. Our wonderful Crew Chiefs have their crews ready to pull all the details together for a true celebration of survivorship.
Doors open at Mayo High School at 7:30am with the Opening Ceremony at 8:45. Come early to enjoy breakfast snacks, a mini-massage, tattoos, and many educational exhibits. Pick up a memorium to recognize loved ones with breast cancer and sign our Walk Mural. Have your little ones start on the scavenger hunt or get a picture with your family and friends at the Photo Op. And don’t forget to bring a little extra cash for raffle tickets (prizes are AWESOME!) and pink ribbon merchandise. Pick up your t-shirts on Saturday from 9-Noon so you have more time to enjoy the festivities on Sunday.
Still haven’t gathered your team to walk with you? It’s not too late! Check out the team-building page and all other Walk details on our website: www.jointhejourney.us. Come and experience the wonderful atmosphere of this annual event. The hope, joy, courage and strength are palpable as survivors and supporters come together to honor, remember, and celebrate! Let’s make this year’s walk our sweetest success!
