Phoenix Leaves Mid-Ohio with Points Lead as Five Races Remain
August 4 2015

Lexington, OH – Coming off two Pirelli World Challenge weekends with race victories, Andrew Aquilante and Kurt Rezzetano exercised superior patience and brought their cars home, and left Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course first and second in the GTS points. The Phoenix American Motorsports and Calvert Dynamics squad was not able to repeat their race winning ways at the World Challenge GTS twin-billing at Mid-Ohio, but capitalized on points while teammate Preston Calvert again raced double-duty, running in both GTS and GT Cup.

Qualifying for round 11 of the season showed that it may not be a Phoenix weekend, with Aquilante eighth on the grid and Rezzetano completing the top 10 in their pair of Phoenix Performance Ford Mustangs.

With practice, qualifying and round 11 mashed into Friday at Mid-Ohio, there was little time between sessions. Come race time, Aquilante’s No. 32 and Rezzetano’s No. 37 showed off their race craft skills.

Despite not having the front-running pace, Aquilante managed to pick off cars and capitalize on opportunities for a third place finish. Rezzetano mimicked the strategy, with a fifth place spot. As for Preston Calvert, he logged one of his best finishes of the season in GTS with a 13th place run.

“It seems to be my plan for the year and that’s to sit back and watch stuff happen," said Aquilante, who won at Road America in June. "Then pick my way through everything. The Kia (Wilkins) was holding up Dean (Martin) and Kris (Wilson) and I was able to get right in the mix too. If something happens, then we’ll take advantage of it.”

More points would be consolidated in front of a large crowd at Mid-Ohio, with five-time SCCA National Champion Aquilante in eighth, just behind teammate Rezzetano in seventh at the checkered flags in Saturday’s race at Mid-Ohio.

The finishes for the weekend help Ford Performance remain at the top spot in the manufacturer’s Championship.

On the GT Cup side of the team, Calvert and his No. 77 Porsche 911 GT3 are looking to bounce back as the team next heads to Utah. Calvert was able to put together two eighth place finishes at Mid-Ohio, but it was not the result he was looking for as he tries to extend the gap in the points’ chase, where he currently sits in fourth position in the GT Cup standings.

The pro season for Phoenix is rapidly coming to a close. As cars are unloaded in the team’s Phoenixville, Pennsylvania complex just five races remain on a west coast swing.

The trailer will be loaded soon enough for Miller Motorsports Park (August 21-23), with double GT Cup and GTS races on offer just outside of Salt Lake City in Utah. From there, it will be a quick turn-around as another double-header weekend follows: Sonoma Raceway with IndyCar a week later. Finally, the 2015 season concludes with single races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the Championship weekend, Sept. 11-13.

TV broadcasts from Mid-Ohio  are as follows on CBS Sports Network: GT/GTA/GT Cup, Sunday August 9 at 4pm Eastern, GTS Wednesday August 12 at 9pm Eastern.

Next up, the Phoenix World Challenge squad heads to Miller Motorsports Park, August 21-23.
