Back at I/ITSEC 2021 with BISim
What a blast to be back at I/ITSEC this year in person! We caught up with old friends, met new ones, and got to showcase and experience state-of-the-art tech that is pushing the boundaries of simulation and training.
At the BISim booth, we were honored that KONGSBERG joined us to debut their new remote weapon systems trainer using VBS4. We were also excited to share the latest eXtended Reality (XR) capabilities available for VBS4 and VBS Blue IG — showing off a variety of commercial headset integrations including Varjo’s XR-3, VRGineers XTAL and the JVC HMD for mixed reality weapons and flight training uses. Around the show floor, dozens of BISim customers including the U.S. Army, BAE Systems, Kratos Defense, MASA Group, and many others, leveraged BISim products as part of their training solutions, underscoring the versatility and flexibility of VBS for a wide range of simulation uses.
This past year has been incredible and humbling: BISim’s core products were selected for major programs as the U.S. Army’s next-generation virtual collective training software, VBS4 serves a key role for the USMC’s Wargaming Center capability, and longtime BISim customers around the world such as the Netherlands MOD continue to upgrade to VBS4.
As we head into 2022, we’re gearing up for major product developments exploiting cloud technologies. Stay tuned as we reveal more details in the coming months. We wish you and yours a restful holiday season and happy new year.
Arthur Alexion, BISim CEO
Here Comes the Boom! BISim Introduces Cutting-Edge Mixed Reality Weapons Trainer at I/ITSEC
At I/ITSEC 2021, BISim unveiled an exciting new mixed reality weapons trainer. Using a mockup of the Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle, the gunner and loader can see each other through the Varjo’s XR-3 headsets’ high-fidelity passthrough cameras, as well as the same blended virtual elements produced in VBS Blue IG and driven by VBS4 as the simulation host.
The entire setup is easily deployable and portable, packing into two Pelican-style cases. It’s versatile, not only to be used as a weapons trainer, but can also be adapted to other uses such as JTAC/FO and medic training. Collaboration is a key benefit of using mixed reality for training - multiple users can see each other both in the real world and in the same virtual environment provided by VBS4 and VBS Blue IG.
"As an instructor, this system lets me evaluate safety discipline, engagement fundamentals, and even see what the shooter sees by staring through their optic as well to see if they have proper eye relief and natural point of aim. This is truly a means of increasing survivability and lethality to the operating forces," said one former military trainer with 15+ years experience in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The enterprise license provides the Netherlands’ military forces across the country and at their international locations with full access to BISim’s easy-to-use, whole-earth virtual and constructive desktop trainer and simulation host.
“VBS4’s remarkably realistic graphical fidelity engages and immerses personnel in training, so they can gain the readiness and repetitions needed to achieve mission success,” said Major Leon van der Heijden from the Dutch MOD Joint IT Command.
