MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Garden Club Members

Whether you have stayed in Naples or traveled to other locales, I hope that a good summer with family and friends will be had by all. Rest up and be ready to jump back into all the NGC activities come fall!

There are many great programs and volunteer opportunities waiting for you on your return. Both the Garden Tour Chairmen Sondra Quinn and Raynelle Perkins and Flower Chairman Melinda Earle are busy getting plans settled for their 2023 events. They would love to have your help.

See you in the fall.

Celebrating NGC’s 70th Anniversary,

Terry
President 2022-2023

ALL OUR HOMES ARE SECURED FOR 2023 HOUSE & GARDEN TOUR!

Get ready for a return to our traditional House & Garden Tour on January 28, 2023! The event will be even more special this coming year, as it will kick-off our year-long 70th Anniversary Celebration with a tribute to six decades of friendship, design and inspiration!

A lot has happened since our Annual Meeting!

The Date

You may have noticed that the tour date is different this coming year! Our traditional “first Saturday in February” has been taken by the Winter Wine Festival and the three-day Naples Car Show on 5th Avenue. We’d never get across town!  So mark Saturday, January 28, 2023 on your calendar now!

House & Garden Tour Committee Chairs

Following Andie Psaras’ resignation as VP House & Garden Tour, the Past Presidents’ Council volunteered to take over leadership of this important event.

Past President Sondra Quinn has stepped in as VP House & Garden Tour (this will be her fourth time chairing the event, so she “knows the drill”) and Raynelle Perkins has agreed to serve as her 2023 Co-Chair.  The position of VP-Elect House and Garden Tour is still open. The Governance Committee is currently seeking a member to fill that spot and prepare for leadership of the 2024 Tour.

Committees

Committees are being formed over the summer.  All Past Presidents and most Board Members have accepted H&GT assignments, but the Club still needs YOU to make this event a success.  Please remember that your Naples Garden Club membership includes a pledge that you will help on both the House & Garden Tour and Flower Show.

If you’re asked to help, please accept. To volunteer, contact Sondra at sondraquinn01@gmail.com or Raynelle at raynelledesign@aol.com.   Many of you have been involved in event planning ...now is the time to step up and “strut your stuff!!”

Houses

Sondra has secured all four houses, putting us on track for another successful event!

Watch for more updates over the summer months!

70th ANNIVERSARY . . . A LOOK AT OUR FIRST YEAR

The Anniversary Committee, led by Linda LaRue Brown, continues to make plans for Naples Garden Club’s commemoration of this, our 70th year, which will commence during our General Member Meeting in January 2023 and will be the highlight of the 2023 House & Garden Tour.

Naples Garden Club was founded by thirty men and women in November, 1953. Naples had become a city in 1949, but still had only 1,465 full-time residents. At NGC’s second meeting on December 2,1953, its constitution and bylaws were approved and dues established at $3.00.

The Club held its first fundraiser that next year.  The event, a festival, was held at the grand opening of Julius “Junkie” Fleischmann’s Caribbean Garden, a restoration of the masterful tropical garden “just North of Naples” created by famed botanist Henry Nehrling.  Mr. Fleishman, heir to the yeast and distillery fortune, later became a NGC member, let the Club hold its annual meeting at the Caribbean Garden for many years and was later made a life member.  The $500 raised at that first Festival was used to landscape the city’s new school (now Gulfview Middle School).

There are so many interesting and fun facts and events surrounding our rich history to share with you. Stay tuned for more exciting looks at our past accomplishments!

The Idea Garden team wants you to see how things have taken off this summer. The crape myrtle is in bloom, our roses are loving the summer heat and our desert rose has a seed pod (have you seen one before??)! If you’re in Naples over the summer, please visit the Idea Garden to see how fabulous it’s looking.

IS YOUR NGC PROFILE UP TO DATE?

The Membership Committee is asking everyone to check your online profile. Please ensure that your contact information is correct and that you’ve filled out the sections that ask about your skills, experience, education and involvement. Members often wonder why they’re not asked to be part of things.  It could be as simple as not knowing what skills and interest you have. Update your profile today by going to MY PROFILE on the Member Homepage.  It will only take a few minutes!

DON’T CALL US!

It may not sound polite, but please do not try to phone the NGC office ... we no longer have a phone.  The phone was not an effective way of reaching the right person, since we don’t have staff to respond to messages in a timely fashion.  Please use email to reach our Board Members and Committee Chairs when needed.

SHARE YOUR NEWS

Please send your garden-related news, as well as any NGC updates or suggestions for Trowel Printsto our 2022/23 Communications Chair Holly Hubbell Lonsdale at  jhhubtobh@msn.com.
