And just like that, it's Wednesday

December 15 — Amy, Collin, and Chad here with your Wednesday Draft. Only ten shopping days 'til Christmas!

🌤️ Partly cloudy with a high of 60° today.

😮‍💨 Smoke 'em if you got 'em! Last week, New Zealand announced plans to become the first nation in the world to ban tobacco. The Netherlands will ban supermarket sales of tobacco starting in 2024.

Better yet, get back on your Peloton.

⚕️ Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms recently presented the city’s highest honor, the Phoenix Award, to Emory's Dr. Carlos del Rio. Calling him the "City of Atlanta’s COVID angel," Bottoms said, "it would have been nearly impossible to overcome this challenging time without his science-based counsel and support.”

➡ This morning, Bottoms will preside over a 10 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony for the Atlanta's Missing Children Memorial, which will feature an eternal flame. The monument will display the names of children and young adults who went missing from 1979 to 1981 during the infamous Atlanta Child Murders.

💸 On Monday at the Georgia Aquarium, Dean Benjamin Ayers of UGA’s Terry College of Business told an audience of about 475 business leaders that “by late 2022, Georgia’s economy will fully recover from the COVID-19 recession.”

He says growth will be driven mainly by strong consumer and business spending and a robust housing market.

🚚 Ayers' declaration arrives just as German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd announced that it will invest $18 million into its new headquarters in Dunwoody. The building will be 125,000 square feet, and the company is expected to create 250 jobs in the metro area.
📸 This week's IG shout out goes to @dnice, who bumped into Killer Mike on a recent @Delta flight.

1. Nonprofit to administer guaranteed income

❤️ Atlanta City Councilman Amir Farokhi has announced the establishment of the Georgia Resilience and Opportunity (GRO) Fund, which will help Black women living near or below the federal poverty line.

The nonprofit, led by executive director Hope Wollensack, is set to launch in early 2022, and will be one of the largest guaranteed income programs in the United States.

The program, called In Her Hands, will provide unconditional cash transfers averaging $850 per month for two years, totaling $13 million, to 650 Black women near or below the federal poverty line in urban, suburban, and rural Georgia – areas with some of the largest racial wealth gaps in the country.

The GRO Fund emerged from the work of the Old Fourth Ward Economic Security Task Force, a coalition of 28 community members, elected officials, nonprofits, religious leaders, and state and national policy advocates convened by Farokhi and supported by the Economic Security Project.

The task force focused on the root causes of disparities in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, the birthplace of guaranteed income advocate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the persistent economic instability many face across Georgia.

4. Simplifying mealtime

🍽️ With two kids under four and a baby on the way, Blake Gleaves and his wife don’t have much time to plan meals.

That’s why the Sandy Springs resident launched a business earlier this year to help answer the constant question: “What’s for dinner?”

Gleaves is the founder of meal-subscription service TheDinnerClub, which recently expanded into areas including Sandy Springs and Brookhaven. It now serves parts of Fulton and DeKalb counties.

TheDinnerClub partners with local restaurants to offer a curated menu of ready-to-eat meals. Customers pre-select a few meals a week, picking the day and time they will be delivered.

“Our goal is to have people take back their evening,” Gleaves said. “Our lives are so busy that you’ve got competing priorities at night.”

With its delivery model, TheDinnerClub says it can save people up to 30% compared to standard food delivery apps.

Restaurant partners include Gusto, Old Brick Pit, Hattie B’s, Osteria 832, Verde Taqueria, Karv Family Kitchen, and Sukoshi.

Now, the company is trying to raise $400,000 to feed its growth.

5. Holly jolly Christmas bars are back!

🍷 It’s the most wonderful time of the year again. That means it’s time for holiday bars, and they are popping up all over metro. Here are five of our favorites.

🎅🏻 Miracle on Monroe declared war on Thanksgiving when it started slinging Christmas-themed cocktails at Tapa Tapa in the Midtown Promenade back in November. Be sure to check out the Jolly Koala, which includes bourbon, cacao nib apéritif, dry vermouth, mulled wine reduction, and mole bitters. And don't forget the Jingle Balls Nog (pictured above) made from cognac, cream sherry, almond milk, cream, egg, vanilla, and nutmeg. Open through Dec. 26. Wed.- Sat. 5 p.m. - midnight (closed Christmas Day)

🗿 Mele Kalikimaka is Bon Ton’s way of saying Merry Christmas to you! The Christmas-themed tiki takeover Sippin’ Santa has been keeping patrons lit up since November. Open through Dec. 30. Check out the "Mistletoe-to-Toe" with bourbon, walnut liqueur, Jamaican and Puerto Rican rums, lime, orange, and maple syrup.

❄️ Wonderland at Willow Bar is back with a full menu of craft cocktails, Belgian beers, and mulled cider, complete with twinkly lights and lodge-inspired domes with knit blankets, Jenga, and custom record players. Reserve a dome.

⛸️ The Roof at Ponce City Market transforms into a holiday playland for children and adults alike. The Skate the Sky ice rink offers stunning panoramic views of the city. To warm up, reserve a Nine Mile Station igloo with a drink menu sporting everything from hot chocolate to "Sleigh Fuel," featuring Old Grandad BIB bourbon, cinnamon, eggnog, and coffee. Also, be sure to check out the Holiday Social Bar, and "Mixmas" at 12 Cocktail Bar in  in the Ponce City Market tower.

💥 Get in touch with your inner Clark Griswold, as Midtown's Foxtrot Liquor Bar hosts a "National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation"-themed bar. Lots of holiday-themed cocktails, including a beer-and-shot combo, called "Where’s the Tylenol?" Next door, Tiki Tango has been transformed into Whoville from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." And if you need to get some fresh air, the parking lot features a holiday pop-up bar with fire pits, games, and cocktails
.

Happy holidays y'all. And remember, don't let Santa drive the sleigh if he's had too much eggnog.
