About US Sailing's Reach Program
US Sailing’s REACH Program utilizes sailing as an educational platform, challenging youth to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based careers. Combining educators, sailing instructors, engineers, scientists with today’s youth to provide them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a cooperative work environment.
What’s Happening in REACH?
REACH is in full effect this summer. It is being implemented in programs and classrooms throughout the US as well as a few programs throughout the world.

Over the past month we have hosted two STEM educator courses. Both were filled with a very diverse audience including Ocean Engineers, middle school teachers, sailing instructors, and marine biologists all looking to implement REACH. Thanks to SUNY Maritime and New England Science and Sailing for hosting as well as to those that attended. Check out the upcoming course schedule.

REACH will be represented at the National Marine Educators Association Conference next week in Mobile, Alabama. We will be hosting a session titled “STEM Community Outreach.” If you are attending the conference please join us.

Calling All REACH Students!
US Sailing is looking for letters from kids at different programs to say thank you to the John B. and Nelly Llanos Kilroy Foundation. They have very kindly provided the grant funds to US Sailing to make REACH possible. We are looking for programs to select a few students to write a letter sharing their experience in the REACH program and what  a great time they are having. Here are a few starters to get kids going:

1. What is one thing that you learned about the science of sailing that you didn't know before you started? *
2. What was your favorite activity in the program? Why?
3. As a result of this experience, are you thinking about pursuing a career in a STEM field? If so, what?
4. Are you planning to continue sailing in the future?

Letters can be snail mailed to US Sailing c/o Jessica Servis 15 Maritime Drive P.O. Box 1260 Portsmouth, RI 02871 or emailed to
Look who is implementing REACH!
Matt Schultz Founder of Life Sail
In 2003, Matt Schulz founded LifeSail, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission of serving inner city youth and special needs participants with character-building programs through the art of sailing and seamanship.  Matt continues to implement REACH working in collaboration with local schools in the Los Angeles area. The photo above shows Matt with his class last fall.

According to Matt, one of their biggest challenges is having students make the connection between what they've learned in school and sailing. Find out how Life Sail makes connections for kids.
A Note from REACH Program Manager Jessica Servis
Every group of students has different background knowledge and experience with STEM and sailing. Start every lesson by accessing students prior knowledge (APK). Ask students what they know. Based on their responses instructors will need to adapt the vocabulary and content. The more experience instructors gain with the content in the modules the easier it becomes to adapt content for each learner keeping all students challenged and engaged.

Share your REACH experiences with US Sailing... If you are currently implementing REACH, please email Jessica at US Sailing so we can include you to our list of REACH programs. We can also provide you with any updates in curriculum or implementation ideas and project partners.

We are excited to learn more about how REACH has made impact on your organization's programs and the people who participate. Thank you!
