Why is your Spring Campaign horror themed??
Thirteen years ago when we started our efforts to reduce gender-based harm in media and online spaces, there were a lot of horrified individuals out there who were convinced that we were going to ruin games. If making games more inclusive, less harmful, and more supportive is ruining them, then we are proud of causing that! We’d like to think of ourselves as toxicity’s worst nightmare!
Feminist Frequency also has a long (13 year!) history of exploring and exposing the most harmful tropes. Stereotypical tropes that are rampant in our media not only make media that is unwelcoming and sometimes even hostile to many viewers but it also works to reinforce negative myths and functions as gatekeeping that stops people from participating in community spaces. We see these same elements in our work - abuse in games spaces is often tied to identity based discrimination, and when harassment occurs, fewer people want to keep working in the games industry or playing their favorite online game.
Let’s tell toxicity it can run, but it can’t hide! Head over to twitch.tv/femfreq right now for an epic livestream and help us reach our $20,000 goal for our spring campaign.
