Programs and projects

  • HDL miRNA as Predictive Biomarkers for Diabetic Vascular Complications in Indigenous Populations [Research] - This South Australian project aims to investigate why type 2 diabetes is a significant chronic disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The project also aims to understand the process behind diabetes impaired angiogenesis (the growth of new blood cells) as a contributor to vascular complications and will look into potential treatments and prognostic (the chance) of diabetic vascular complications in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Diabetes increases vascular risk complications leading to co-occurring diseases such as peripheral artery disease and retinopathy.
  • My Health For Life [Service] - This free, Queensland (Qld) based six-month program designed to decrease participants' risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Strategies include healthy nutrition programs, physical activity, understanding personal risk of developing health conditions and how to make healthier choices in everyday life.
  • Reducing Driving Mishaps Among Adults with Type 1 Diabetes [Research] - This Victorian project aims to help drivers with type 1 diabetes better anticipate, prevent, detect and treat low blood glucose while driving. The plan is to develop an Australian version of the   DiabetesDriving.com intervention (DDA), an education program designed to support at-risk drivers with type 1 diabetes.

We respect all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people—their customs and their beliefs. We also pay our respects to Elders past and present, with particular acknowledgement to the Whadjuk people of the Nyoongar nation, the traditional owners of the lands where our offices are located.
