President's Message

Portsmouth Arts Guild is ready for 2022!  We have discovered the key to resiliency during changing times is to be flexible. Over the past two years, we have created many ways to keep the Guild active and provide interesting classes, exhibits and activities such as the weekly challenge. We have increased our social media presence. That being said, we are starting the year by going virtual again. The Sights in RI Show will be a virtual show and the first two classes for the year will be zoom classes. Also, car plein air is continuing through the winter. Paint in the warm comfort of your car, but then have a great meet and critique outside to hear quick feedback on everyone’s art. We are scheduling a Member’s Meeting on February 7th at 6:30pm. This will be a zoom meeting. You will be receiving a postcard soon with the details and invitation. Since we did not have a meeting last year, we urge all to attend this meeting so we can reconnect and discuss the future of the Portsmouth Arts Guild.

Your First Picture Book

This class, led by Thea Ernest, is designed for artists who have a vision of creating their own child’s picture book. This is a fundamentals class beginning with Thea’s own experience illustrating Billy the Rescue Dog, authored by Susan Joyce and designed by Jeanette Chow. Our goal is for you to finish with a rough draft of a book of your own.

Dates: Two Sessions
February 1:  9:30 – 12:30
February 22:  9:30 – 11:30
Tuition: $115 PAG members/$145 nonmembers

Day One:
Discuss Thea’s collaborative work on Susan’s children’s book. This will include:
  • The roles of author, illustrator, designer
  • Contracts
  • Team communication, negotiating changes and the effect of the pandemic
  • Practical influences on illustration and design to make a better book
  • Publishing Billy the Rescue Dog

Day Two (3 weeks later):
Review, as a class, each student’s rough draft of their story and artwork.

Thea Ernest arrived in Rhode Island in 1983 ready to surrender to art at Rhode Island School of Design. After receiving her BFA in Jewelry and Light Metals in 1987, she created custom cabinet hardware and decorative metalwork both for private homes and historic properties. In the past several years, Thea has gravitated toward the immediacy, color and portability of plein air watercolor. Throughout the year, no matter what the weather, you may see Thea in her AutoStudio – a 2010 Honda Fit – or outdoors capturing scenes across RI. Thea has taught and presented workshops at Portsmouth Arts Guild, What Cheer Flower Farm, East Bay Bikeway Art Day, Providence Art Club and the Seekonk, Rehoboth and Washington Park Public Libraries. She was an Artist in Residency at the Whiterock Conservancy, Coon Rapids IA, in the fall of 2021. Her commissioned home portraits grace walls in several states.
