President's Message

We would like to welcome new board members Jan Burling, Kathleen Tirrell and Penny Carrier. We are excited to have them join us and are looking forward to their valuable ideas concerning the Guild's future. We want to sincerely thank board members, Wendy B. Davis and Susan Graham who will be retiring from the board. Their relentless energy, genuine enthusiasm and support for the Guild has helped us navigate through these difficult times.

The end of the year finds the Guild in great shape and ready to move into the new year. The Holiday Show will be held at Common Fence Point. See the intake notice on the website and  below. The show will remain up during the Christmas season to encourage people to think about giving art this year.

The Guild hall will be opening for shows in the new year and shows will run concurrently with shows at Common Fence Point.  A show schedule will be posted soon. December sees the return of Thursday Open Studios!  Beginning December 9th, all are welcome to paint from 10am - noon. Our fund raiser, The Great Art Heist, is back on the calendar post Covid. This will be a very enjoyable event and will benefit our organization immensely. Remember membership renewal is due on  March 1st when we start our fiscal year. Tis the season!  Consider gifting a membership to the Guild this holiday season.

Looking forward to another art filled year at the Guild.

November Sunday Plein Air

Winter hours in full effect as the sun sets so much earlier than anyone could want.  Beginning with our first date in November, it’s (definitely) fall back for the November 7th meeting.  Join us to paint each Sunday – either in true plein air style OR from our cars.  It’s definitely that time of year. Paint from 2 - 4 then gather from 4 - 4:30 to share our work.  Questions?  Email pleinair@portsmoutharts.org

“Nature surrounds us, from parks and backyards to streets and alleyways. Next time you go out for a walk, tread gently and remember that we are both inhabitants and stewards of nature in our neighborhoods.” – David Suzuki

11/7 -  Church Street Wharf and the Firefighters Memorial Park 147 Thames Street, Bristol: Paint from the park: the town pier and marina, home of the Harbormaster’s office, the Prudence Island ferry and several commercial fishing and clamming vessels. Public parking and street parking available.

11/14 -  Wayland Square, Providence: Paint the charms of a classic New England neighborhood from coffee shops to bookstores to restaurants (and even a patisserie) from the sidewalk or the warmth of your car. Street parking available throughout the Square.

11/21 - Sweet Berry Farm, Middletown 915 Mitchell's Ln, Middletown: A farm market, café, and a pick-your-own farm (although we’re a bit late in the season for that) centered around a classic post-and-beam barn. From humble beginnings as a hobby farm to the current farm stand extraordinaire, there is plenty to paint. Come paint the architecture and the harvest. Plenty of parking on site.

11/28 -  Adamsville (Little Compton): Where else could you paint a variety of scenes in a village that is situated in three towns and two states? Historic buildings, Gray’s Mill Pond, the “Spite” tower and the incomparable monument to the Rhode Island Red. Parking in Westport or Little Compton!

Painting with Wool - Needle Felted Cardinal
With Wendy Anctil
Saturday, Nov 13th 9:30-12:30
PAG members $80, nonmembers $110
Limited enrollment

In this class you will learn how to use a felting needle and dyed wool to create a cardinal on a felt background, mounted in a 6” embroidery hoop. Learn proper felting needle handling and use, color blending techniques and more as you work on a small-scale design. No experience is necessary. All materials will be provided, but do bring reading glasses if you need them as we will be working up close and with a sharp instrument.

Wendy has been exploring fiber arts since 2019 and is mainly self-taught in the art of wool felting. She creates beautifully textured paintings and sculptures using wet and dry felting methods. Wendy’s felted landscapes and felted wool sculptures have been featured at HeARTspot Art Center and Gallery in her home town of East Providence, and she won the People’s Choice Award at the Bristol Art Museum’s “Cold Snap” gallery show in November 2019. Wendy also received second place in the Portsmouth Arts Guild’s “Imagine Fabric” show in August 2020 for her piece, “Pink Sky”.
