"Indigenous peoples today have united like never before."

How do you stay motivated in the face of the onslaught of outrageous news? At Amazon Watch, we're inspired by indigenous peoples standing up against enormous odds and successfully defending their rights.

Late last year, a group of indigenous nations in the northern Peruvian Amazon mobilized to protest decades of oil pollution poisoning their rivers. Amazon Watch was honored to visit those water protectors in the town of Saramurillo during their three-and-a-half month action. Soon afterwards, they won! They forced the government to send high-level officials – including the Prime Minister – to negotiate with them in their territory, and the government promised to address the environmental and health crises caused by four decades of oil pollution.

We're excited to share with you the positive outcome of that story, as told by many of the indigenous leaders and community members themselves. You can share in this victory by reading and watching these compelling written testimonies, photos and a video, produced by our friends at the Chaikuni Institute. Then you can take action to support the communities as they work to hold the Peruvian government accountable.

The people united will never be defeated!

In solidarity,

Andrew Miller
Advocacy Director
