Happy New Year!

2016 proved to be a very productive and eventful year for the teachers of computing in the North West with many school and teacher events being well attended - Thank you!
You can read all about many of our events on our news pages.
So what is next? Here at CAS Manchester we are very excited and busy planning for the year ahead. We hope you find some useful information in this newsletter however if there is any support we can offer please get in touch we are more than happy to help and would be delighted to hear from you.

Master Teachers 

Master Teachers are at the core of all support that Computing At School offers and we are delighted to welcome our newest Master Teachers to CAS Manchester.

We our delighted to welcome our newest hubs
  • Oldham hub - A newly incorporated Hub based out of the Blue Coat School in Oldham. The hub leader is Andrew Mkandawire who will be delighted to welcome you at his forthcoming events.
  • Rochdale hub - A new hub based out of Cardinal Langley RC High School, Middleton. The hub is hosted by Wahida Hamid a CAS Master Teacher.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at one of the CAS hubs or events over the coming months.

Teach Meet in Manchester

What is a TeachMeet? A fun, informal event for sharing great ideas for teaching and learning with opportunities to network with other educators.

FREE Edge Hill Computing
Workshops for Teachers

November saw colleagues from across the North West join us for a day full of brilliant workshops at Edge Hill University.

The day consisted of workshops including: Wearable Technology, Sphero programming, Tenderfoot, 3D printing, Python, code bug, MYSQL. You can read all about it here.

We are really pleased to continue to offer FREE, quality workshops for all teachers of Computing. These will take place at Edge Hill University,  we'd love you to see you there.

There will be several workshops running and these are currently being finalised so if you have any particular requests please get in touch and we will try to accommodate them.
We have 3 further days planned for 2017 that you can sign up to.

More CPD for teachers

There are already numerous CPD events planned across the region. Many of these are already being advertised on the events page and are open for bookings.
Below we are highlighting some of the upcoming events.
Programming Minecraft using Python on the Raspberry Pi with Jamie Edmondson
This event will provide activities and ideas for using the Raspberry Pi in the Primary Computing classroom. This is a half day event and you can find further information and booking opportunities on the link below.

An introduction to Kodu 
This training session will explore Kodu and how primary aged pupils can program their own X-box style platform games, whilst at the same time learn key programming concepts such as reasoning, selection and use of variables.

Beginners Python
An introductory session to introduce teachers to text-based programming using the Python language.

Intermediate Python (KS3 and KS4) with Jamie Chadwick
This is a continuation course following the very successful beginners session held previously.

The 'Flipped' classroom for GCSE Computer Science
Delegates are introduced to the benefits of the flipped classroom methodology and will develop strategies for implementing it successfully.

School Events

In the previous year we have ran extremely successful event at The University of Manchester for school children and their teachers. In the calendar so far for this year we have 'Fun with Computing@ primary days, Explore Computer Science and CAS Girls events. You can read about these events on our webpage. The events for 2017 are fully booked however if these events interest you please drop us an email and we can add you to our waiting list or even try to arrange events in your school.
Junior Hack event on March 6th 2017

This is an event for teachers and their Year 10 pupils. 

Digital companies will set challenges and offer prizes for the best hack. This doesn't just mean the best code - its about working well as a team, being willing to learn, showing all kinds of skills. This is a fun event where the aim is to work together, learn and produce a cool app, website or game (or just try to!) If you've not done a hack before, no matter - there'll be friendly mentors on hand to help you out. You just need to form a team of four and some enthusiasm and be ready to try things out.

A Level Master Classes

We headed into new territory this December by offering a VI-th Form Master Class day at The University of Manchester. The sessions were delivered by University of Manchester staff on Object-Oriented Programming, Functional Programming and Algorithms and their Complexity.
The event was extremely popular with over 100 students and their teachers attending. 
Should we run more of these events? Let us know if you would be interested in bringing your A' Level students in to the university to take advantage of this opportunity.
