Dear CAS member,

Welcome!

Welcome from the University of Southampton, which has joined the NoE as the CAS Regional Centre for the South of England (CAS South East).  We currently cover the 19 local authorities in the South East:

Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, West Berks, Reading, Windsor & Maidenhead, Slough, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Medway, Kent, Surrey, Hants, Southampton, West Sussex, East Sussex, Brighton & Hove, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight

The Centre is run by staff from Electronics and Computer Science (ECS - http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk) and the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre (MSLC – www.southampton.ac.uk/MSLC),  Southampton Education School.  Through these two institutions, we bring significant expertise and experience in computing and in professional development.  We have extensive links across the South East and will be providing support locally.  The staff involved are:

Professor Les Carr, ECS - lac@ecs.soton.ac.uk
Rob Blair, ECS - rdb1g11@ecs.soton.ac.uk
Janice Griffiths, MSLC – jbg@soton.ac.uk
Suzy Gray, MSLC – sg2@soton.ac.uk

Our Role

Our key role is to provide support to Master Teachers in our region to help maintain and extend their interactions with other teachers of computing. We will also be looking to identify and train new Master Teachers (if you are aware of colleagues who might be interested in becoming a Master teacher, please would you let us know).  We will be working with partners across the region, including CAS Lead Schools, CAS Hubs and Hub Leaders, other HEIs, LA Consultants, industry partners and those with an interest in computing and teaching of computing.

BBC Micro:bit events - Autumn 2015

These events offer Master Teachers, Lead Schools and teachers the opportunity to train with experienced professionals to use the BBC micro:bit.   We hosted an initial event in Southampton on 30th September, which was very well-received, and will be following up with similar events across the region when UK-based trainers become available. Some schools have already offered to host an event, but do email mslc@soton.ac.uk if you are interested.  Venues need to provide a room for up to 50 teachers, excellent wifi access and catering.

Teacher Subject Specialism Training

CAS South East is running subject knowledge enhancement in Computing at Southampton. The 5-day programme is suitable for those already teaching outside their specialism, those wishing to add a specialism or returners to teaching who wish to improve their subject knowledge.  The first full training day is on Monday 9th November – see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/mslc/teachers/professional_development_opportunities/subjectspecialism.page? for further details.  This programme can be run in other locations in the region if there is sufficient interest.  You can complete an expression of interest at https://www.isurvey.soton.ac.uk/15988.

Future Events

CAS South East is planning a number of events in the region including a training session by Master Teachers, for Master Teachers; an Awarding Organisation event focusing on controlled assessment for the current Computer Science GCSE specifications and the headline changes in the new GCSE specifications; a micro:bit project and fair; and secondary and primary conferences. Look out for emails from the Centre and events on the CAS website for more details.
