CWN Chair Spotlight

CWN elected an almost entirely new leadership this year, and we would like to introduce ourselves to you! We will be featuring a different chair every newsletter so you can get to know us.

Rebecca Andersen

Pronouns: She/her/hers
Position on Campus: Director of Career Services & Alumni Relations
Position in CWN: Diversity & Advocacy Chair
LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccakandersen/
Time at UC Berkeley: 14 years!

What motivated you to join CWN, and what do you want to accomplish in your role?
I am interested in increasing equity in career development and CWN serves an important role for womxn on campus in this area. Womxn have intersectional identity factors that make us fabulous assets for UC Berkeley but also can cause us to experience structural barriers that CWN can serve as a vehicle to create a supportive space for womxn in their personal and professional lives, and partner with other staff organizations (particularly identity-based staff organizations), as well as highlight some of the unique concerns of our community.

What is a hobby or activity that helped you cope during the pandemic and stay at home orders?
New traditions such as "Friday night, movie night" where we have a family movie night, rotating who gets to pick the movie and who gets to pick the take-out.

CWN Group Spotlight: Parents of Teens & Tweens
Cal Parents of Teens and Tweens is an informal networking group, sponsored by CWN, for UC Berkeley employees who are parenting teenagers (and soon-to-be teenagers). The group was founded by CWN member Michele Rabkin in 2018, when her own daughter was thirteen, as a way to create community and support for working parents making their way through the turbulence of the teen years. The group meets on an occasional basis (3-4 times a year) for lunchtime conversations, either in person or via Zoom. Some sessions are devoted simply to check-ins and peer support; others are organized around a specific topic, such as the college application process, or a special guest speaker (most recently Christine Carter, author of "The New Adolescence: Raising Happy & Successful Teens in an Age of Anxiety & Distraction"). New members are always welcome; email Michele at micheler@berkeley.edu if you'd like to be added to the mailing list and invited to the next meeting (coming up in October).
