CHINA | UN SHOULD SUPPORT CALLS FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE OVER TIANANMEN

China has ramped up efforts to block and silence any voice speaking about or commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen democracy movement. UN human rights experts, as well as the UN Secretary-General himself, should clearly speak out in support of human rights defenders in China and work to ensure that no one can forget June Fourth.

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER'S PROFILE | WANG DAN

Wang Dan was one of the most visible student leaders of the 1989 democracy movement in China. As a result, he immediately figured on top of the 21 ‘most wanted’ by Beijing police. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment in 1991, and to another eleven years in 1995, before being released and seeking asylum in the US. ISHR had the pleasure to meet him and hear his story.

REPRISALS | NEW ISHR POLICY BRIEF: REPRISALS AND THE SECURITY COUNCIL

In a new Policy Brief, ISHR sheds light on the situation of intimidation and reprisals related to the engagement of human rights defenders with the Security Council and provides concrete recommendations on how to prevent and address reprisals and intimidation in relation to that engagement.

TREATY BODIES | FACING UNPRECEDENTED AND UNACCEPTABLE CUTS TO THEIR WORK

The work of UN human rights experts is essential to promoting a rules-based
international order, fair and just societies, and protecting the dignity and rights of
marginalised and disadvantaged people. In a joint letter, 399 civil society organisations
call on UN member States to urgently tackle the current funding crisis affecting
the functioning of the UN human rights expert bodies.

As the 2020 review of the treaty bodies approaches, ISHR and NGO partners are calling for the process to fully reflect the perspective and views of rights holders and victims, and to use the opportunity to strengthen the system.

PHILIPPINES | CALLING FOR ACCOUNTABILITY FOR VIOLATIONS AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

In light of a further smear campaign targeting human rights defenders in the Philippines, a joint NGO statement calls for an international investigation into extrajudicial killings in the 'war on drugs', and for an end to attacks on human rights defenders, independent media, and democratic institutions.
