CHINA | COUNCIL SHOULD URGE CHINA TO AMEND LAWS AND RELEASE DEFENDERS

China's failures to respect human rights defenders and to hold violators accountable cannot be overlooked or excused, says ISHR. The brazen crackdown on the domestic human rights situation must stop, and the Council must step up its efforts to ensure that China gets this message. 
 
MIGRATION | DEFENDERS HAVE CRUCIAL ROLE TO PLAY

Human rights defenders and other civil society actors and organisations have a crucial role to play in upholding migrant rights, providing services to vulnerable groups, and working with governments to address the refugee policy crisis. They should be supported and not restricted in this vital work.
 
VENEZUELA | STOP STIGMATISING HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS AND COOPERATE WITH THE UN

ISHR calls on Venezuela to prevent smear campaigns, criminalisation, arbitrary detention and other severe challenges that human rights defenders face in the country, urging the government to allow UN experts to visit and examine the situation.
 
UGANDA | REPEAL LAWS RESTRICTING HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS' RIGHTS

The Ugandan Government must repeal domestic laws that restrict the work of human rights defenders and should refrain from criminalising their legitimate activities, say ISHR and the Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum.

REPRISALS | HIGH-LEVEL UN OFFICIAL SHOULD ENSURE ACCESS FOR VICTIMS AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR PERPETRATORS

The recently appointed high-level UN official mandated to combat acts of intimidation or reprisals should ensure that he is visible and accessible to victims and rights holders and active in pursuing accountability for perpetrators, ISHR told the Human Rights Council today.
 
GENERAL DEBATE | CONTINUED CRACKDOWN ON CIVIL SOCIETY UNDERSCORED

The global scale of the crackdown on civil society and human rights defenders was among the key issues during the Human Rights Council's General Debate on situations requiring its attention. A range of statements by States and civil society urged to put an end to the attacks and harassment against human rights defenders and to refrain from imposing illegitimate restrictions that severely affect their work.
ZIMBABWE | STOP RESTRICTING HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS' ACTIVITIES

ISHR and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights call on the Zimbabwean Government to improve the situation of human rights defenders and align domestic laws with international human rights instruments and protections guaranteed in the Constitution.
 
BURUNDI | COMMISSION OF INQUIRY BRIEFS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

As the Human Rights Council heard the oral update of the Commission of Inquiry on Burundi, ISHR called for the suspension of Burundi’s membership from the Council due to the country's lack of cooperation and its Government’s repression on human rights defenders.
 
RESOLUTION | RENEWAL OF SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

Norway has formally tabled a resolution renewing the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders. The resolution has changed very little since 2014, but simply renews the mandate. At the time of writing, over 60 States have co-sponsored the draft. The resolution, along with many others, will be considered by the Council on 23 and 24 March. 

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER PROFILE | XIMENA RAMOS PEDRUEZA CEBALLOS

Lawyer Ximena Ramos Pedrueza Ceballos from the Mexican Center for Environmental Law presented her work to ISHR. She also highlighted the challenges faced by indigenous communities who fight against the Government's projects harming their environment.
