Flat Leader Project Launched
The Dole Institute puts new spin on a popular children's activity, in order to stay in touch with students and staff as they work and play in Lawrence, KS, across the U.S., and abroad this summer. #FlatLeader14
If you aren't familiar with Flat Stanley, he is a character from the popular children's book of the same name, written by Jeff Brown in 1964. An accidentally flattened Stanley finds that he can do some pretty interesting things and have some wild adventures in his altered state, including mailing himself in an envelope to friends. As a school project, teachers in the U.S. often have students create their own "Flat" versions of themselves to send to friends or relatives living in other cities, where their "Flat" student can have its own adventures.

Well, the Dole Institute has just launched the Flat Leader Project. Senator Dole's beloved Schnauzer, Leader, and subsequently Leader 2, could often be seen bouncing around Capitol Hill. We thought Leader would make the perfect "Flat" character to highlight all of the interesting things our students and staff will be doing this summer, and to share those experiences with YOU. As staff and students send us their photos of Flat Leader taking selfies wherever he goes, we will share them with you through our weekly email and social media. Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter so that you can keep up with all of Flat Leader's adventures and watch the different ways that the people of the Dole Institute interact with their world.

2014 Kansas State History Day
Congratulations to 1st place winner,
Sadie Keller, Lawrence High School junior
As part of National History Day, the Dole Archives was proud to sponsor the Robert J. Dole Congressional History Prize at the Kansas State History Day competition again this year.  The prize is awarded to three Junior or Senior Division entries that include discussion about the United States Congress in their research and presentation. Winners receive up to $300. This year’s first place winner went to Sadie Keller from Lawrence High School for her live performance, The Americans with Disabilities Act: The Social Mandate That Defines the Responsibilities of All to Protect the Rights of Some.  After extensively researching at the Dole Archives, Keller wrote and performed scenes as Senator Bob Dole, highlighting issues pertaining to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Prizes were also awarded to Kaylee Berroth, Seaman Middle School, PMRC: Their Fight for Music Censorship Rights, and Kim Jalosjos, Seaman Middle School, The Voting Rights Act of 1965: Ensuring the Vote for African Americans.

The Dole Institute supports a new initiatve from the Bipartisan Policy Center
Regardless of political affiliation, if you are tired of partisan gridlock in Washington, you can get involved and engaged by voicing your concerns. “Lip Service” is an innovative new video campaign released by the Bipartisan Policy Center as part of its Citizens for Political Reform initiative. Imbued by Senator Dole's belief in "crossing the aisle" to get things done, the Dole Institute's mission includes encouraging citizens to get involved and engaged in the political process and to do so with civility. Because of our mission, it is easy to support the BPC's new initiative whole-heartedly. Please visit their website to sign up and find out more.
