PHIMA Annual Meeting Recap

Thank you for attending the 81st PHIMA Annual Conference! We had close to 200 attendees this year, held at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center.
The meeting kicked off with our PHIMA President’s Welcome from Margie Stackhouse, RHIA, CPC. This was a great way to get us in the mood and excited for the upcoming sessions!
During Monday’s general session, Jill Clark, AHIMA Board member provided the AHIMA 2019 CSA update and Karen Gibson, CCHIIM Chair provided with a CCHIIM update.
Monday’s Keynote speaker was Bappa Choudhury, who delivered a very motivational and emotional speech on compassionate leadership on understanding people’s WHY to elevate performance. Also, Bappa introduced the audience to his ‘BBB’ model of Breathe, Balance and Believe in order to elevate our happiness and performance in the workplace as well as in our personal lives.
Monday’s tracks included presentations in the areas of:
  • Enterprise Information Governance
  • Patient Portals
  • Patient Safety indicators
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement
  • Analytics
  • Project Management
Monday’s Business Meeting began with the installation of officers, honoring our Distinguished member, Karen Gibson and the student scholarship winners; Jackmely Hernandez and Kathleen Baumer. Congratulations to all!! Monday evening was a fun President’s reception featuring music by the Buffalo Run Boys (including our own Dan Christopher on keyboards!), a photo booth and networking/camaraderie.
Tuesday was packed with a variety of different topics including cybersecurity, coding, coding, health literacy, how to handle remote workforce and installing the concept of Technology Business Management culture.
During Tuesday’s general session, Denise Johnson presented on the evolving role of the HIM professional and Fr. Paul Abernathy from FOCUS Pittsburgh concluded the meeting with a passionate and enlightening discussion of how HIM professionals can help build a trauma informed community by the use of HIM related tools such as technology and Analytics!
PHIMA is pleased to announce that our Annual Conference scholarship raffle raised $2165. A big thank you to all who donated items to the raffle and to KIWI-TEK for their generous donation.
Hope you all had a wonderful conference this year and we look forward to seeing you next year!
