THIMA President’s Message

By Donna Coomes, MBA, RHIA, CHPS, CCS, CPHQ, CHC

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year. As THIMA members we have a lot of exciting events to look forward to within the next few months. I hope you took advantage of the free CEUs that were offered for January 13th for the HIM Leadership Development webinar. We have more upcoming webinars with free CEU opportunities planned for you so be sure to stay connected via THIMA eNEWs or the website.

There is still time to nominate someone for a THIMA award. Deadline for online nominations is February 10th. The online nomination process is very easy. What a great way to recognize a colleague, or mentor.

The THIMA ballot is still open!  Would you like to volunteer for an executive board position? Do you have someone you want to nominate for a THIMA executive board position? Nominations can be done online at the THIMA website. Volunteering is an extraordinary experience that I wish everyone could experience.

Coming up on February 12th in Brentwood is the Information Governance(IG) Boot Camp. THIMA is partnering with the American Health Information Management Association's (AHIMA's) IG experts to provide an innovative method for information governance learning and application. This is a great educational opportunity to gain knowledge to help positioning our members to lead IG  within our organizations.

Tennessee Hospital Association (THA)/THIMA Hill Day is March 1st & 2nd in Nashville.  All THIMA members are encourage to participate.

Registration for the 66th annual meeting scheduled for March 9-11th in Nashville is now OPEN! Our THIMA volunteers on the program committee have out done themselves planning an amazing meeting! I look forward to seeing you in Nashville!

If you can’t make the previously mentioned events then perhaps the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) exam prep workshop is the event you have been waiting for.  This workshop was initially scheduled to occur in January but in consultation with AHIMA, the dates for the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) Exam Prep Workshop was changed. The new dates are March 23 & 24; the meeting will still be held at the THA Headquarters in Brentwood. This change will allow all of us more time to consider, prepare, and encourage others to attend the workshop and expand our skill sets in this important domain.

Your THIMA board and volunteer groups have been very busy ensuring our THIMA members have access to a good mix of online and in person education opportunities. As I close this message, I want to encourage you to volunteer at the local, or state level. Our member are what make THIMA such an amazing professional association that we are. Hope to see you at one of the many upcoming events!

CCHIIM approves an extension of the deadline to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs

CCHIIM re-evaluated the ICD-10 CEU Requirement and approved an extension of the deadline to earn and record ICD-10 CEUs.  Prior to this extension, policy deadlines were both the last day an individual could earn ICD-10 CEUs in addition to having their credential(s) placed into inactive status.  The new deadline to earn and record the required number of ICD-10 CEUs for RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, and CHPS holders is March 31, 2016.  As required by the current policy, holders of these credentials will be placed in an inactive status on their original deadline date of either December 31, 2015 or January 31, 2016, but will still be able to earn and report CEUs until March 31, 2016 in order to avoid the credentials being moved to a revoked status.
