Inside this issue - April 16, 2015:

More Changes Published by CMS

CMS recently released Transmittal 585 adding language to Chapter 3 of the Medicare Program Integrity Manual. The guidance allows Medicare contractors to alter codes (up or down) in certain circumstances, thereby adjusting the payment. The full impact of this change is difficult to quantify. Providers should watch for more information as this change is implemented.

Split Claims with ICD-9 / ICD-10

Here is the guidance given by CMS regarding claims that span the implementation date of ICD-10:

SGR and ICD-10

On Tuesday evening, April 14, the Senate passed HR 2 which repealed the use of the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) for physician payment of Medicare services! Several amendments were debated but none included ICD 10 language (as has happened in the past) and all amendments failed. The Senate acted less than three hours before CMS would have had to reduce Medicare physician payments by 21 percent. President Obama released a statement saying he would sign the bill, which also extends the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

This development has a potential impact on the implementation of ICD-10 in two ways:
  1. Now that this issue has been dealt with by Congress, we will continue to monitor other bills to make sure ICD-10 delay language is not included.
Ironically, ICD-10 will be an important aspect of the payment system that is replacing SGR which is designed to measure and pay for quality. Here is a great summary of the connection published by the Coalition for ICD-10:

KAHIMA Participates in Knox County Career Day

On April 13, 2015, hundreds of students and their parents attended and visited exhibitors at the Knoxville Expo Center to learn more about career options available to them as they are nearing high school graduation and making the decision on where their career path should lead them.
Students asked questions to earn career bucks then cash in the career bucks at the end of the event for prizes. They asked questions such as:

“Is a college degree needed to enter this field”
“Why did you choose this field”
“What do you like most about this field”
The volunteers who represented KAHIMA at the event (Jennifer VanOver and Susie Easter) answered questions from approximately 50 students and parents during the 2.5 hour event, passed out flyers for local HIT programs, and gave a small gift with the KAHIMA logo to the students who stopped by the booth.  Students were encouraged to Google KAHIMA and learn more about the HIM field.
Students and parents were provided with an understanding of what the HIM/HIT field entails with “in the box” and “out of the box” positions, showing the AHIMA Career Path Map, and providing info about the local colleges that are CAHIIM-accredited.  Students were also advised that different levels of degrees and credentials can be earned and the HIT field is very versatile.
KAHIMA coined the phrase “Want more than a job”… “Want a career” … Consider HIM/HIT!
