Inside This Issue -
President's Messsage, MU Final Rule, ICD-10 Transition, Need your Input, Local Meetings and MORE - October 9, 2015:

President’s Message

Donna CoomesHooray!  ICD-10 is finally here! Like many of you I was anxiously awaiting October 1, 2015, in anticipation of the long awaited implementation of ICD-10.  While we can expect a few challenges with the change from ICD-9 to ICD-10, we are confident that the HIM profession will handle the move to ICD-10 with the confidence, skill, and determination that the HIM profession has demonstrated with the many other challenges we have faced, such as, the adoption of Electronic Medical Records, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Meaningful Use, Patient Portals, and Health Information Exchanges.

While we are discussing ICD-10, have you heard about AHIMA Code-Checkâ„¢?  AHIMA is offering a new service designed to provide practical assistance on ICD-10.  Go to  http://www.ahima.org/topics/codecheck  for more information. The THIMA Board wants to encourage you to share with us your ICD-10 success stories and challenges.  Let us know how we might can help you with the transition.

So what’s next?  The THIMA Executive Board attended the AHIMA 69th House of Delegates (HoD) meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 27, 2015. At the HoD meeting we discussed the HIM profession in the era of big change as our profession continues to “evolve”.  Attendees at the meeting discussed the trends in the HIM profession, such as, centralization, specialization in HIM, virtual workforce, and data/information governance and other emerging nontraditional roles.  Some of the recommendations shared during the HoD meeting were to incorporate informatics into the HIM acronym, increase focus on technological governance and skills to produce usable business intelligence, and consideration of consolidation of credentials.

Information Governance (IG) and data analytics education will continue to be a focus for the coming year.  THIMA is working with AHIMA to offer an IG bootcamp workshop in early 2016.  This year we will also begin advocacy efforts for a voluntary national patient safety health identifier.  In order for healthcare providers to truly have interoperability, to timely and accurately exchange patient information, a national patient safety health identifier is needed.

The AHIMA Foundation received a $4.9 million government grant for an apprenticeship program which will place approximately 1,200 recent college graduates in health information on-the-job learning experiences. This is great news considering the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 22% increase in job opportunities for the HIM profession by 2022.

During my 2 hour drive to and from West Virginia this weekend to see my mother I was amazed by the beautiful colors of the tree leaves.  I hope you are able to take some time and enjoy the change of season with a warm cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or beverage of choice!

Make plans to join us in Franklin, Tennessee on March 9-11, 2016 for the 66th THIMA Annual Meeting!

Seven Days In: How Is ICD-10 Going?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) says that, because providers usually submit claim batches every few days, rather than the day service is provided, they won't know for at least a couple of weeks how the switch to ICD-10-CM/PCS that went into effect last Thursday is going. The agency says it expects to know even more when Medicare and Medicaid business cycles are complete, which takes about 30 days. If you need help with claims questions now, CMS recommends contacting your Medicare Administrative Contractor first. The ICD-10 Coordination Center or the ICD-10 ombudsman, Bill Rogers, MD, can also help.

Based on comments made by a few THIMA members, the transition has been relatively smooth so far.

Stage 3 Meaningful Use Guidelines Issued

On Tuesday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) released final rules for stage 3 of the "meaningful use" EHR Incentive Program, as well as the final rule for the 2015 Edition Health IT Certification Criteria.  Several requirements were reworked in this round to be easier to meet—something many providers have been calling for in recent months.  The Journal of AHIMA website outlines the key changes.  The public can comment on the stage 3 rules for 60 days after they are published in the Federal Register.
