President's Message

thimaAs my term as THIMA President comes to an end, I want to thank all THIMA members for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your THIMA President. Serving our professional association has been such an amazing experience.

What an amazing year our association has had. We finally moved to the long awaited ICD-10! Our profession continues to transition with industry changes like the implementation of electronic physician documentation, patient portals, health information exchanges, and meaningful use objectives. During the year, THIMA continued to offer education to our members to aid you in staying at the “top of your game”, such as, ICD-10 webinars, an Information Governance boot camp, Certified Health Data Analytics exam prep workshop, and HIM Leadership Development webinars.

HHS/OCR continues to focus on the patient’s right of access. Just released are three videos with the intended audience being the consumers. Access the video’s at https://www.healthit.gov/access.

During the last year, I like many other THIMA members have experienced the loss of a family member, friend, and fellow THIMA members. I personally experienced the much too soon loss of my mother but I was very fortunate to be surrounded by support, not only from my biological family, but also my THIMA, and my work family. While there has been so much I have learned this past year the one most important thing I learned is how valuable our time is and how important it is to continue to grow my list of friends and family.

As I transition into the THIMA Past President role on July 1st I look forward to working Alisha Smith, MS, RHIA, CHPS as the incoming THIMA President and continuing to network with our THIMA members. I encourage you to volunteer at the local, state, or national level. As Winston Church said, “We make a living by what we get. But we make a life by what we give”

Donna Coomes, MBA, RHIA, CHPS, CCS, CHDA, CHC, CPHQ
