It’s Time for a Hard Reset

Submitted by: Tabitha McDaniel, RHIA-PHIMA President-Elect
Change is one of the guarantees in life. Change of seasons. Changes in relationships. Changes in our day to day. Changes in mindset. Some handle change better than others, but that doesn’t stop the change. And, as you may have already guessed, this year CHANGE is coming to AHIMA.
Earlier this month, several members of the board of directors attended AHIMA’s annual Leadership Symposium in Chicago – themed Inspiring Leadership Influencing Change. The two-day forum included a variety of general and break-out sessions designed to build a strong foundation for elected and appointed leaders and was complete with representation from nearly every state – including Alaska and Hawaii. Each session was collaborative and engaging and each day left us filled with resources, tools and ideas for how to make an impact to AHIMA at the national, state and local levels. We even made a little time to tour the AHIMA offices and enjoy the city.
While I could write a book about our experience and the value that it will infuse into our organization, I wanted to showcase what I believe to be the most powerful moment of the symposium. This moment occurred in a discussion with AHIMA’s President Diann Smith, MS, RHIA, FAHIMA and AHIMA’s CEO Wylecia Wiggs Harris, Ph.D, CAE during a session focused on AHIMA’s highlights for 2018. In this session, they boldly proclaimed ‘It’s time for a hard reset.’ They discussed the magnitude and speed of change in the healthcare industry today and a difficult but honest set of conversations that the board has had in the few short months since Wylecia’s arrival to determine where AHIMA is positioned within that change. They went on to explain that the board has decided to stop, reorganize and refocus initiatives, objectives and strategic plans. Some changes have occurred already with the staff at AHIMA but many more will be established before the end of this calendar year.
Get ready to be energized. Get ready to be empowered. Get ready to be part of an AHIMA that is unlike anything you’ve seen before – an organization engaging members at the forefront of change and leading major changes throughout healthcare. Many of the details are still being finalized, but the board of directors is committed to strict timeline. What my summary cannot effectively capture is the excitement in the room during this discussion and the standing ovation to signal ‘Job Well Done’ to Diann, Wylecia and the AHIMA board of directors.
Personally, I’m energized at the magnitude and type of changes previewed at leadership this year. I’m anxiously awaiting to hear more in the upcoming weeks and at the annual convention in Miami this September. I hope you are too. After all, we’re in this together. I challenge you to embrace the change and seek your own ways to inspire leadership and influence change. Cheers to you and to change!
