Issue 41 - November 2013

Inside this Issue:

President's Message

For many of us this is a special time of the year.  We pack our bags and head to a new city for the annual AHIMA convention. This year it’s Atlanta, Ga. for the 85th Annual AHIMA Convention. Your State Delegates will attend a Leadership Conference all day Sunday.  It is always stimulating. There are expert speakers to help us learn ways to better lead our state organizations. We work on teams with others to identify what our organization needs to do to succeed, what best practices other states have found to be effective, to gather ideas and energy to motivate us and to keep us moving forward in an ever changing environment.

Over these past years I’ve made many new contacts at convention that are now friends. I look forward to seeing them again, finding out where they are working and what they are doing. One year I met a young woman from one of the Arab countries – only in her 20’s and not long out of her studies, she had become one of the first HIM professionals in her country. Another one of the friends I’ve made is from the Deep South with a drawl so thick you’d think he never lived anywhere else! Surprise, he grew and still has relatives in Glen Burnie, Md. I tease him and call him my cousin ‘cause that’s where I’ve lived for most of my adult life (and No, I don’t have a southern drawl!).

Anyway, as I continue to tell everyone coming into our field, network, network, network. Each convention creates a wonderful environment to learn, grow, and make new friends. We’ll do a special report when we return from Atlanta to keep you up to date on AHIMA goals and plans for the coming year.

One of the areas that AHIMA has been working on is Advocacy – they are not only promoting our expertise and profession but also helping us to find ways at the state level.  I’d like to extend a personal thanks to Marsha Marcus who took the initiative to advocate for our profession. Marsha has worked in Long Term Care for as long as I have known her. A certified HIM professional’s oversight of long term care facilities health records has always been required by the state. Marsha found out there was the possibility that requirement would be removed. She took the initiative to contact Don Asmonga who is over AHIMA’s Advocacy  Program and ask for AHIMA’s support to show why it is so important to keep qualified HIM professionals in this role. Thank you Marsha for being our advocate.

I will close with the note that AHIMA is proud to announce the first annual Member Appreciation Week, November 11–15! See the article about the activities and free seminars available to you during this time.

Announcing the Results of the
2013 AHIMA Election

A Note from your MdHIMA President:

Thank you to all MdHIMA members who voted. If you haven’t seen the final results I’ve reprinted them below. As an organization that is governed by its members, it is extremely important that we take the time to learn about the candidates and vote. A total of 5,273 votes were received - that is only 9.9% of our members who voted. Not a very good turnout. We need to find out why members are not voting so watch for a survey in the near future.
