ICD-10 Update

L – R :   Lela McFerrin, Elizabeth Delahoussaye, Donna Coomes, Wanda McKnight, Kyle McElroy
THIMA Delegates, Speaker-Elect, and Executive Director visited the offices of Senators Alexander and Corker as well as Representatives DesJarlais, Blackburn, Cooper, Fleischmann, Roe, and Duncan advocating for ICD-10 implementation October 1, 2015.  Things look good for ICD-10 !

From AHIMA eAlert 3/26/15:

The House of Representatives is expected to vote today on HR 2, the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, which, if passed, would permanently replace Medicare's Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR). The bill does not include any language related to ICD-10. Yesterday the House Rules Committee unanimously voted to close HR 2 and not allow any amendments to the bill. An amendment was proposed by Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL) calling for a delay of ICD-10 implementation, but was not added to HR 2. In March of last year, an ICD-10 delay was slipped into legislation creating a temporary fix to the SGR. But unlike last year's SGR patch, which was the 17th of its kind Congress has passed in 12 years, the current bill would repeal and replace the SGR formula for good. Read more at the Journal of AHIMA website or the full text of the bill.

If the bill passes the House, it will go immediately to the Senate. Let your senators know you oppose any amendments to delay ICD-10, and that you oppose dual coding—there are better approaches, such as advance payments, to address physicians' concerns about financial risks. Call or tweet your state senators (both links open Excel files), as well as the following key Senate members:
  • Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY):
    (202) 224-2541
  • Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX):
    (202) 224-2934
  • Ted Cruz (R-TX):
    (202) 224-5922
  • Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV):
    (202) 224-3542
