President’s Message

The first month of this fiscal year was nothing short of busy. The THIMA Executive Board attended the AHIMA Advocacy and Leadership Symposium in Chicago July 15th and 16th with a focus on “Inspiring Big Thinking to Launch Our Future.” The new AHIMA “2017 and Beyond” Strategy was showcased with in depth conversations surrounding the four AHIMA Strategic Objectives: (1) Lead in Informatics & Analytics (2) Champion Information Governance (3) Create Pathways for Health Information Professionals in Emerging Roles and (4) Connect Consumers to Their Health Information.

The Health Information Management Reimagined (HIMR) whitepaper is a framework for transforming Health Information Management (HIM) practice and education. Recently, AHIMA's leadership reviewed and commented on the first draft. The second draft is now available for comment at through August 31. The current draft whitepaper was presented at the CSA Leadership Symposium in Chicago and at Assembly On Education (AOE) in Denver. AHIMA is anticipating an additional round of revisions before the final draft is published in the fourth quarter of this year, so be sure to provide your comments and let your voice be heard!
Go ahead and mark your calendar for March 8-10, 2017! The THIMA Program Committee had successful meetings in Knoxville July 28th and 29th to begin planning the wonderful event.
The THIMA Executive Board met with Senators and Representatives in Washington, DC in April 2016 to discuss the desire for language to be changed in a bill that prohibited the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) from discussing solutions of a national patient health identifier. We recently received notification that the House Appropriations Committee proposed legislation to allow HHS to begin discussing patient identifiers. While there are challenges with this bill, I wanted to take the opportunity to make you aware of this change as we continue to work with our legislators and strive to potentially have the language added to the Senate Appropriations bill.

It's Time for You to CAST YOUR VOTE!

The 2016 Election for AHIMA will take place online at August 1–15. All active, new graduate, and emeritus AHIMA members are eligible to vote.

Remember to vote for our own, Karen Scott, for AHIMA Board of Directors Director!
