ICD-10 earthquake caused barely a shake


The troops, 125 soldiers, huddled around monitors in war rooms set up in Kansas City, Kan.  Strategist Mike Hourigan had decided what they needed to be ready for battle was food.  “All kinds of stuff, pizza, soda, coffee and bagels,” Hourigan said.  They waited and listened for the first shot, scheduled for midnight, Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015.  But then, “We haven't heard of anything,” said Hourigan, director of consulting and regulatory strategy at health information technology vendor Cerner Corp.

Clarifying Questions and Answers Related to the CMS/AMA Joint Announcement and Guidance Regarding ICD-10 Flexibilities


On July 6, 2015, CMS and the American Medical Association (AMA) released a joint statement about their efforts to help the provider community get ready for ICD-10. This statement included guidance from CMS that allows for flexibility in the claims auditing and quality reporting processes. In response to questions from the health care community, CMS released Clarifying Questions and Answers Related to the CMS/AMA Joint Announcement and Guidance Regarding ICD-10 Flexibilities, which provides answers to the most commonly asked questions. On September 22, CMS reissued these questions and answers with revisions to questions 1 and 9, as well as 9 new questions and answers.

ICD-10 coding questions? AHIMA will check your work


The October 1 deadline was really just the beginning. As ICD-10 coding gets underway in earnest next month, there will be plenty of questions that need answering for providers nationwide. AHIMA wants to help.  "AHIMA Code-Check doesn't just provide answers to questions but will show all the key steps for how the correct code was arrived at. It can be an important and ongoing source of continuing education," said AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon in a press release announcing the service, as the group gears up for its convention and exhibit in New Orleans next week.

Diagnostic Errors Fuel Health IT Safety Concerns


With last week’s highly publicized Institute of Medicine report shining a light on electronic health records and the widespread problem of diagnostic errors, industry observers are hoping that Congress will reconsider funding a Health IT Safety Center that lawmakers have heretofore opposed.  The IOM report specifically called out EHRs for their contributing role in causing diagnostic errors, and provided health IT-related recommendations to improve the diagnosis process.
